The dark-colored leaf has absorbed enough energy from sunlight to become warm enough to melt its way about 3/4 of an inch into a layer of ice on the surface of the ground, forming a very recognizable impression of a red oak leaf in the ice. The beech leaf to the left has not managed to produce quite such a distinctive impression.
