Shot from Rt 113, between Holderness and Center Sandwich. Mt Israel, on the right, has played a significant role in the history of Sandwich. One of the earliest families of the area, the Smiths, settled the land at the base of the mountain and had a long and eventful history there through most of the 19th century. Once their pastures went far up the slopes of Israel. During half of the 20th century the Boy Scouts had its most important NH wilderness camp on the Smith farm site. Now the area is used by several conservation groups in the pursuit of environmental education and protection. A fire tower, now gone, was on its summit for many years.
