35 Chris Craft, recently totally refurbished, hit rocks and took on water south of Governor's Island. Air bags going on now and towing it to Mountain View to be taken out of the water.

10 were aboard at the time - all safe ! And I understand it- they hit in the Witches. It was towed over and is presently sitting on the bottom on a beachfront of Gov island until they airbag it and float it to MVYC
Sad way to end the season.

Yes, and it is the one that Nick Wilmerding did all the wiring on. It was a beautiful boat. Completely redone interior, cabinets, wiring Etc.

As I said before --- feel for the owner -- NOT a good way to end the season, but thankfully everyone aboard was okay .

Was it the Witches? I gotta think with a vessel like that they'd have GPS and one of those dotted line things to show safe passage.

He was doing about 14 knots and thought he was outside of the markers. Sad story, nice guy, nice boat. He is the second owner who had the boat totally rebuilt by Miles Marine. The first owner of the boat was Gerry Angiulo. Great history!

That’s brutal, it’s surprising they were able to tow it to MVYC even with the floatation bags. That’s going to be difficult if not impossible to repair, so sorry to see this happen to anyone but even worse when they’ve put so much into restoring it.

Holy mackerel! All I can think of is what the owner felt when he heard the first CRUNCH! Talk about having that ”sinking feeling”

My heart goes out to the owner. Winni is a very unforgiving lake, The captain needs to be so very much aware of nav markers each and every minute.

This is what it should look like. Might not be as tough to fix the keel as I thought.

FOR THE RECORD -
I have seen a "dust up" over another post in Social Media (iBoat) over pictures & statements posted. First & foremost, I am NOT that poster. Second, should any of my pic's in this thread wind up in the media (newspapers, etc.) it is WITHOUT my authorization!! I posted these as the event was "public" knowledge and I feel it serves as a good warning to all us boaters of what can happen...………. Again, with 10 aboard, this could have had a VERY different ending …….. thankfully - it did not! As stated above, the owner recently spent a tremendous amount restoring this craft & I feel for him.

At least it wasn't in June or July and he got the season to use the boat. At this point they will have all winter to make the repairs. As Phantom said, it is nice that no one was hurt. |

Does anyone know exactly where this guy hit rocks?...I'm hearing conflicting info. Now hearing he hit rocks by Eagle Island and floated into the witches. If true, that's a long way to float especially with the damage seen in the pics.
I do see a lot of boaters try to cut between Eagle and the black markers just to the North. While it can be done in a smaller boat during full lake, certainly no one in their right mind would attempt in a boat that size at 19" below full lake. Not saying this is what happened whatsoever just the curiosity of where he exactly hit interests me... Dan

To Watrskir: Your posts are off the mark! Everyone that posted was respectful and sympathetic towards the owner. There is nothing here to be concerned about.
We have all learned a lot from this website including the lessons learned from the accidents of others. I think the information posted on this site has made many of us better boaters and helped to further a sense of community on the lake. It's all good! |

The point of my last post was to make clear that this Forum was the ONLY place where I have posted as I have since seen it pop up elsewhere. I notice that you are (like me) a long time Forum member, albeit an infrequent poster, so clearly this thread (not started by me, btw) "hit a button" with you .........… I will let my record of posts & comments on this Forum stand their own !

Not condemning anyone here, just saying if this were me, I would prefer the intimate details of damage done to the boat not be broadcast to the world. I think its enough for any of us who love our boats (and all boats) to say this is a heartbreaking event for the owner. |
