First time ever having an Osprey fly over our house here in Laconia. I was doing some yard work today and this was a pleasant surprise. Judging by the size, I would say that this was an adult female.

Nice shots.
I have a Hawk that flies around my house every once in a while. I can hear it shriek and then whoosh it fly's by. I never have my camera around like you do though.

Awesome shot. We have a Peregrin and lots of Red Tailed Hawks. I will try to capture over the summer. If it ever gets here it seems after todays weather.

The are no documented Peregrine Falcon breeding sites in the Lakes Region as of 2004. If that's really the type of falcon you're seeing that is awesome and I am envious (and would love to see a picture).

I remember a few years ago seeing a Peregrin nest on top of a real tall light tower on I-93 in Maine.At least I was told that was what was nesting there.Now that I think about it,maybe it was an Osprey.

We saw an American Kestrel in Gilmanton last summer. (picture is representation, not actual sighting)

Thanks for the kind words, the lens was a Canon 400mm f/5.6.

Ahh. That explains it. My partner and I love taking wildlife shots, but rarely get as close as we would like. We'll have to save up a LOT of loose change to get that 400mm lens, but as you prove time and time again, it would be worth it.

They are definitely in the area.

Mrs. DRH, now known as Quilt Lady, identified my bird as a Peregrine Falcon. It was eating a Blue Jay.

This is still outstanding camera work.

The Canon 400mm f/5.6 is not an IS lens, so there is no image stablization. Assuming you are shooting with a Canon digital body with a 1.6 image factor, the the 400mm is like a 640mm on a standard 35mm body. The image is so clear for a hand held shot.

Back to the subject, there are definately Peregrine falcons around the lake. I have seen two in the last five years close to the Weirs. No idea if they are breeding, they might just be visitors on vacation.

I was driving past the veterinarian place near the Libby museum in Wolfeboro yesterday, and a small Falcon of some type flew right past my windshield. The only thing I noticed about it was that it seemed to have a lighter colored stripe going across the top of it's tail. Tail was brown the stripe was a lighter beige or even white? (Left to right) It was moving very fast.

There is also a Falcon that seems to fly by my deck every once in a while. It has used the same flight path on several occasions. And it flys by very close to me. I figure my property heads down a fairly steep hill and all it has to do is glide down....

It flew by on Saturday and I watched it head into the trees. By the time I grabbed my camera and looked around in the woods I couldn't find it.

Just to add to my Falcon sightings. I saw one the other day in Moultonborough near the Laconia savings bank, and another one near the Suissevale Entrance sign. It was up on a power wire, across the street from the entrance. So I have seen a few Falcons around. More so than in the past few years. Maybe they are staging a come back? I also saw a very bright yellow bird today. Small. Don;t know what it was. At first I thought it was a parakeet. All yellow.

Audubon Society awarded this Florida Osprey photograph a First Prize for 2016:

Serious birders would have noted this Osprey prizewinner is "vocalizing".

Saw two Ospreys going south to north over the east side of the lake this morning. They were the Marine VTOL type. Not nearly as impressive as the actual raptor!

The roar was indescribable. It sounded like several Super Stallion military helicopters—all together!

Occupied with a timely project that needed glue and clamps, I didn't look up to see them—but their presence could be felt—and heard.
