This is (I, think) a tunnel that goes under Rte 11 near the Mt Major hiker's parking lot. When this section of Rte 11 was first built, the original trailhead for the Mt Major trail was left on the wrong side of the road, and the tunnel was created to make it unnecessary for hikers to risk crossing the road in heavy traffic. Some years later the state leased the land where the present parking area is and made a more convenient and safer trailhead parking site.

I had heard that the trail to Mt. Major started originally at Boulder Lodge, and that the State agreed to build the tunnel to preserve the trail when the "new" Rte 11 was built.
