Default 2006 Ice-Out Watch II

The ice is melting fast out here... still large floes around, but very thin. The ice at my shore is several inches thick but getting porous. Several fishing boats float by way out there... Some islanders have come to their camps by boat. I came with DBA and Father Nuke this morning via airboat.

I will post pics later... but is mostly looks like Snake Eyes is showing.

It is very exciting to be opening on April 1st... It's coming folks... get those boats ready!!!!!

Default ice out

The ice is moving at an incredible rate in down Alton Bay. It's absolutely amazing to stand at the window and watch.
One of the joys of living on the lake is watching Mother Nature do her thing!

Default Wind

The wind has kicked up and is blowing the ice away.. I ran down to the dock to listen to the ice tubes clank into each other... such a unique sound.. The white caps have settled down and now there is just a strong current... Watch out Chestnut Cove... here comes our ice!

Default Thanks Hazelnut

Hazelnut, nice touch. Looking forward to more pictures. We're around the corner, but always enjoy pictures of this small corner of the lake. I'll be anxious to see what you post after your Sunday trip.
And thanks all for the updates on 19 Mile Bay. Went up a couple of weekends ago and was amazed at all the truck pulling the ice houses off the ice. Not surprised it's still ice-in on the bay.
Any updates would be appreciated.

Default Ice Conditions

RG, I was by Paugus Bay around 4PM and saw that the ice sheet had broken up a bit more. The manager at the nearby hardware store said that the wind had shifted the ice sheet to the north and started the break up. With the thunderstorms forecast for sometime this evening, maybe we'll see more ice break up due to the winds.

Talking Was That You UTS?

That is a riot! I thought I saw someone who looked like you taking a photo as I was leaving. I almost went back, but I’ve been told to beware strangers on the side of the road! Did you stop on the side road across from the scenic view area and was the Mrs. with you?
(You may have seen me, I call my vehicle "Big Red".)
Weekend that is great news!
When I went by the bay, I was glad it isn’t on the Mount’s route anymore!

No, the Mrs wasn't with me. She was chained to the desk at the Yarn Shop today.

There was an SUV pulling out of the scenic view as I was pulling in. There was also a small white car there as well.

I guess we'll just have to stop not meeting this way !

What a beautiful day at the lake today. I just wish I had been in a boat!

Default More pictures needed

OK folks... get out there with your cameras... we need updated pictures of the bays..Alton Bay, Wolfeboro Bay, Moultonboro Bay, Paugus Bay, Meredith Bay... Minge Cove..

Someone needs to go up to Akwa Vista and take a few shots..

I am sort of stuck out here on the island (poor me!) with DBA, etc. It is too windy to come out and look for ice.. but the wind must be doing something to the remaining ice.

It is up to all of you..

Get up, get out and get on with it... come on Upthesaukee... we need an update...

Where is the ice?

I have checked all the cams and can find the ice. Did it all blow down to Wolfeboro?

Default Alton Bay

The Bay seems clear except for a section down by Sandy Point. A huge change since yesterday.
Any guesses as to when official "ice out" will be called?
How is Center Harbor?

It will be called when the Mount would be able to make its regular route. I was wondering where the hold up is?

As you were posting this, I was in Levey Park taking a picture of the bay.

Bear Islander, see the attached link of Alton Bay pictures, and that would be one of the things stopping the declaration. There is ice from about a quarter mile or less N of Sandy Point down to the bandstand. Most of it is big chunks that will be going bye bye real quick.

here's the link to see the latest from "Baywatch" Alton Bay style...too cold for those bikinis!

As of yesterday afternoon Fay's Boat Yard docks, Smith Cove and Glendale were open. Out towards the 40 Islands had ice but with the wind I would expect a lot of it may be gone today.

RG I was not too far behind you yesterday. I stopped at Peppers at about 2:00. Had a great WP's steak sub. Thanks Pepper.

My boating season will start very soon with all this wind breaking up the ice.

Default Lees Mills

Only small amounts left in coves as of Saturday PM
First and second bays out and partial towards Greens Basin.
Too many things to do on first trip to venture far. I have a couple of new pictures in the PhotoPost from Satruday.
But watch out, the water is late fall low.
Need a rainy April to bring out the May boats.

Default Alton Bay Rocks!!!!! Check it out

After being really good and having a chicken Caesar Salad at the house, we decided to wash it down with some ice cream at Shibley's, and a good reason to check the ice out one more time. This morning there was ice outside Sandy Point, and now :

But down by the Mount Washington dock :

But after eating ice cream :

While we were eating our ice cream right by the dock, we could literally see the ice moving past the dock. There is ice on the far side of the bay from about abeam the markers off Back Bay bridge, but there is plenty of open water on the west side of the bay..

Not that I am the authority, but I can make a really good case for ice out in Alton Bay, at least!

Talking Sleepers Island

Yipeeee! Got to Sleepers today. Little windy but so nice to be there. No problems this year with pipes. Deck furniture is out and ready for summer.
Went out of West Alton Marina. It is all open. Can't wait to get back.

Default Ice Out Update

Went over to Mink on Saturday Morning. Mostly clear from Glendale north but had to go around the east side of Round Island and push through a couple of ice-flows. That's why we have work boats.... The area around Timber, Mark and the West side of Mink were still locked up with large amounts of punk ice/slush. The wind really kicked up hard last night/today -- not so great for fishing, but it did move the ice out. This morning you could still see white over to the north (Moultonborough), but by early PM is seemed clear. Everything is now completely open from Shep Brown's east along the south side of Bear well into the Broads. Only protected coves have any remnants of ice. Official ice-out must be imminent!

Be aware that the lake level is still low and there are a lot of branches/debris drifting around. Also, my impression from trolling around is that ice damage to permanent docks appears generally worse than usual. The east side of Mink, for example, has three docks that have sustained material damage, including one that is essentially a total loss. Saw some banged up docks over on the south side of Bear today too.

Mount Washington cleared by noon, giving us our first clear view as a kick-off to our earliest beginning season ever!

Red face Forgot the camera

What Ice? I forgot my camera but it doesn't matter because there was NO ice to photograph. I was in these areas: Meredith, Center Harbor, Long Island, Harilla Landing, Akwa Vista, Weirs beach, Gilford, Silver Sands. The only shred of ice I saw was all locked in at Trexlers Marina and that was only because of the HEAVY winds that pushed all that ice into the cove. Other than that almost 90% + of the lake looked passable by boat. Ice-Out should be any day now.

Thumbs up Ice, ice gone away

I agree with hazelnut. When we started some yardwork at 11 am, there was ice in Alton Bay from just past Sandy Pt to north of the gazeebo. I was all black and punky and you could watch the waves ripple it up 'n' down. Really an aggregate of small unlinked floes than a single sheet. The wind came up and blew the ice down the bay so that by 2 pm it was concentrated from Pleasant Pt to the gazeebo. We took some pics that look like UTS's pre-ice cream shots. Drove from Alton to Meredith and there was no ice to be seen anywhere. I was almost set to take another pano from Aqua Vista but decided there was no point - there was no ice to be seen. The only place where we didn't check was Wolfeboro. Ice out will be today or tomorrow !

Default I made it!

After turning back on Friday due to large ice flows, I was able to go to our camp on cow by boat from harilla on Saturday. Although I had wanted to make it by boat in March for the first time, April 1 ain't bad!
The camp has some electrical problems ( every GFI outlet and 240 volt appliance didn't work and the pump was acting strange). I suspect lightening or power outages blew the cartridge type fuse in the circuit breaker pannel and others may find similar problems on opening day.
Despite no hot h2o, fridge, etc., the peace and quiet were welcome! It's gonna be a great year!

Sounds like you've lost one of your two 120 Volt feeds. I wouldn't run your pump too many times until you've found the problem or you'll burn it out. If your cartridge fuses check out then look at the service coming to the camp and make sure a tree or branch didn't take out one of your 120 feeds or worse, the neutral. As with all electrical issues BE CAREFUL.
