Wink In ancient times

In ancient times there lived a young sea serpent named Ms Winnie. She was a little known serpent who was a first cousin to Loch Ness. Young Winnie frolicked in the Western Atlantic. Her favorite pastime was finding out of the way to passages into little know regions. She would swim up rivers and streams to explore various lakes and playgrounds. One day she entered a Great Bay and continued to swim up stream through McDude River until she found a large body of water with many islands and deep holes.
As she was playing in the Board part of the lake diving to deep holes, she met a Great Spirit named Pesaukee who was with his friend WD.
Pesaukee ruled the air, land and water. He had a home high in the mountains on the western shore of the water. They fell in love and wanted to be together all the time but Pesaukee lived on the land and Winnie lived in the water. Since Peasukee controlled the land, air and water, he caused a great upheaval of the land so that he could live with Winnie. The upheaval caused the McDude River to change course and not connect with the lake. Therefore Winnie could not return to the Atlantic by the way she came. The lake water to flow north of Peasukee’s mountain and Winnie did not know where the water went.
Pesaukee talked Winnie into staying with him. As a wedding present to Winnie he created a large island from part of his mountain. It was surrounded by water.
So that Winnie could live on the island, she had to become a land serpent. She chose to become a Rattlesnake. Pesaukee gave the island to Winnie as a present with the understanding that all the women that lived on the island would be kind, good and love their island.
That is how we have Rattlesnake Gal and Island Girl.

The lake became known as Winnipesaukee.

Default What a lovely story

... so that is what happened? I always wondered. I especially like the part about the McDude river... and your kind words.

Now if pesaukee could only stop the rain... I think he is filling the lake a little too much.

Default Flboater what have been smoking?

I haven't heard a yarn that good in quite a while. Those meds you're on must be some good stuff or is it you have gone a little bit astray since you have been laid up for so long? Want to do diving?

Here is chapter 2 of the adventures of the McDude River Swimmers – Grant the Dolphin

When Ms Winnie swam up the McDude, she was follow by a young handsome dolphin called Grant. Grant loved playing in the deep parts of the lake with Ms Winnie.
He discovered that diving to find treasures could be fun and he left Ms Winnie to find her own adventures.
Grant discovered that many times his friend WD would find the treasures first. This was because WD was aided by “Blood Sucking Snails of Winnipesaukee”. (These creatures are 12” in diameter and their shells are clear and you can’t see them sliming across the bottom lake. That is until they find an unsuspecting swimmer and latch onto them and then gorge themselves with blood then you sure can see them. )
Grant started playing with Rock Bass but they really were not friendly and hard to find. So, Grant started to play with smaller fish. He showed them first how to create schools and then he would chase then so they could practice schooling. He then set up a jumping practice course in the Broads to train them to jump out of the water when the waves were high. These fish became known at White Perch because they practiced their jumping over Grants white belly as he swam upside down and in front of them to give them instruction. To this day if you are in the right place at the right time you can see them forming schools and jumping out of the water. You should look carefully around them and you just might find Grant.

Post Chapter 3

Chapter 3

As Winnie, Peasaukee, WD and Grant were playing in the Great Spirits Smile; several other adventurers were finding their way to the lake. These include the great fishermen Upthesaukee. He settled at the beginning of the McDude River. From his new home he could watch all the new entries into the lake. He counted the salmon in the spring and watched for Grant the Dolphin. His home was on the side of a hill that formed his own fishing bay and from there he could watch the sunset over Peasaukee Mountain.

Upthesaukee wanted to follow Grant and Winnie around the big lake. He found a large log and chopped out the inside. He would troll the lake on his new floating log from dawn to dusk looking for the mighty “Green and Black Horn Pout”. He raised his crayfish in his back bay and used them while trolling up the lake. His floating log was not large enough or fast enough so after a great micro-burst that fell many trees he increased the size of his log by creating down-riggers from the fallen branches. He wove together the bark from the fallen trees and created a large matted area. This he stretched between two smaller trees createing a wind catch. The wind catch was attached to a medium log that he stood up in a large floating log.
The wind created by Peasaukee on his mountain helped Upthesaukee to move his log out into the great Boards. Here he put down his outriggers with the attached crayfish. He caught many fish this way but no Hornpout.
One day he happened upon WD while out in the Boards. WD showed Upthesaukee where there were many rocky ledges in the lake. Upthesaukee created a new smaller log that could go close to the shore and ledges. One day his fishing branch pole bent and a large Green Hornpout appeared at the end of his bark line. He pulled the Green Hornpout into the log and carefully took him off his branch pole. He found a special cove with rocks and built a rock gate (Weir) to hold the Great Green Hornpout. The Great Green was not happy because he missed his relative the Great Black Hornpout. Upthesaukee could not catch a Great Black although he did catch many smaller Hornpout and smallies. Because Great Green was so lonely he began to not move around and became sick. Upthesaukee realized this and removed the Weir so that Great Green could find Great Black. He succeeded and they both went back to their favorite rocky shore.

Default Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Having easily created his fast moving log, Upthesaukee thought that he could sell these models to others. While cruising the Great Lake he found the trader Fatlazyless, who was impressed with his Floating logs. Upthesaukee contracted with Fatlazyless to see if he could sell his ideas to the great Wal Lodge. FLL was successful in making the best deal for Upthesaukee. Many log, wind catches, down-riggers, and matted areas were sold to neighbors.
The Great Spirits Smile started to become crowd and Winnie and Grant had problems frolicking in the waves. Peasaukee, who controls all things, continually changed the direction of the wind and created smaller islands and coves. Peasaukee made new rules so that everyone could avoid hitting the new islands. These rules were named “No Wake” and “150 Foot”. Everyone was expected to follow these rules. To make sure that everyone obeyed this rules, Peasaukee hired neighbors to check out people. He equipped their logs with blue fire at the top of the medium tree. Everyone that saw this new log slowed down and obeyed the rules.

Wink Chapter 5

Many neighbors discovered the joys of living on the shores of the Great Spirits Smile. In summer they often got Floating logs and played on the water. Others frolicked in the water searching for treasures with WD or rode behind fast moving Logs with bark on their feet. The weather and water was warm and the sun shone bright. Visiting among the neighbors was done by water and land. They would gather at great eating places. The best meeting place was run by Pepper who served cousins of crayfish with butter in a great roll. Here all were greeted as neighbors.
At the end of summer, many returned to the south via the Merri River which was formed by the “Great upheaval”. Others stayed long enough to watch the trees change their colored coats. After getting their direction from the many birds that circled Winnie’s island, these neighbors would then go south by land and water. They became known as “snow birds”. They went to a sandy land called Florida and played on the water all winter. Some years the cousin of Peasaukee would cause great southern storms which cause the dwellers of Florida to run or hide until the storms passed. Other “snow birds” were forced to stay longer by the Great Spirits Smile until the great southern storms ended.
The hardiest neighbors stayed all winter long with Winnie and Peasaukee. They kept busy building log homes, cutting logs for fires and sitting around the fires to stay warm. They would tell stories of their summer adventures on the lake. They would climb Peasaukee’s Mountain and meet KTO, SIKSUKR, and BroadHopper. Then they would
put bark on their feet and slid down to the bottom.
As the water of the Great Spirits Smile got hard, neighbors would meet in the Broads and create villages called Fishville on the hard water to fish from little holes. Throughout the area many winter Carnivals and parties were held. The greatest of these was run by Upthesaukee on the hard water below his home. Many came on their sliding logs from all over the Great Spirits Smile. They created a large pathway on the hard water. Neighbors riding large birds flew in to meet their friends. Island Girl painted pictures on bark rolls of the event and Rattlesnake Girl wrote tales of the events.
