A flume, in the natural world, is a narrow channel cut through solid rock by a stream over thousands of years of time. This flume at Shannon Brook is about 12 ft wide and 6 - 8 ft deep. It starts under the bridge and leads to the top of Roaring Falls, a distance of about 70 ft and generally has water running no more than a foot or so deep; but the recent deluge has this flume filled to a depth of 6 ft or more, directing a surging torrent of water to the top of the falls, seen at the bottom of the photo.
