A telephoto shot from 31 miles. Cardigan is one of NH's most climbed mountains - it has been a popular hike since the early 1800's. Nearly all vegetation was cleared from its summit in 1885 by a fierce forest fire and now it offers a 360 degree panorama from its bald 3155 ft peak. It has had a fire tower on it since 1904 - the present steel tower has been there since 1924. This photo barely shows the structure. It has a close neighbor, also quite barren at the top, called Firescrew - it was also ravaged by fire, but not quite as completely as Cardigan.
