On Piper Mt in the Belknaps there are some interesting stone (lithic) constructions - mostly stone chairs, but also this stone enclosure. A veteran hunter of Gilford tells me that these were built and used by hunters of the recent past as blinds for fox hunting. Similar stone structures throughout New England have also been speculated to have been built by pre-colonial Indians as spiritual aids in the observance of their religious practices, or, as aids in orienting them to certain observations of astronomical phenomena important to them for spiritual or agricultural reasons - seasonal events, such as solstices or equinoxes, or dates for planting or harvesting of crops. Information about similar lithic objects can be found at http://neara.org - click on photo gallery.
