This is a shot of the high ridge of the Ossipees from the summit of Turtleback Mt, also of the Ossipees. Note the unusual markings on the rock ledge at the lower right. This is probably an example of 'columnar jointing' - when certain kinds of lava flows cool at a critical rate (slowly and evenly) the tensions created cause the formation of closely stacked 3 to 11 sided columns of rock. Here you see only the tops of the columns. Devils Tower in Wyoming is an exceptional example of this phenomenon - there are not many places on earth where really fine examples occur.
