Some of these large wood boats had 12-cylinder Packard engines, while some others had the "straight-8". While there was no noise law back then, attempts were made to muffle their through-transom racket at idle. One "fix" was to attach an 8-inch section of automobile tire across the top of the exhaust pipe flange. It would pose no restriction when cruising, but at the dock, the gentle pressure of lake water would hold the patch against the exhaust. While normal conversation was again possible, it sprayed water on anyone in range!
