Rotting ice in the lake and a rapidly dwindling snowpack on the highest peaks are the last significant remnants of winter. In this shot from the shores of Saunders Bay we look over Bear Island and through the valley separating Mt Paugus from Mt Passaconaway to the still snowy summit of Mt Washington - the 5500' southern ridge of Washington known as Boott Spur also remains mostly snow-capped still. The summit of Paugus shows at the far right, but Passaconaway's summit is just out of the picture to the left.
