From a spot on Rte 28A, about halfway between the Alton town beach and the old Oak Birch Inn site, one can briefly look up the bay for about 32 miles to a huge mountain mass framed by the sides of the bay. The mountain is Sandwich Mountain, known more familiarly as Sandwich Dome. From the view spot you look right over Echo Point to see it. One of the finer trails of the White Mountains, the Algonquin Trail, leads from Sandwich Notch to this peak - it offers many splendid views from numerous open ledges on the way to the top. And the drive to the trailhead on the famous Sandwich Notch Road is an adventure in itself.
