Alton Bay. Postmark 1924 - Lakeport, NH - A divided back NatureKrom card. The first steamboat, a sidewheeler, was built in Alton Bay and launched in 1872 by Boston and Maine Railroad. This was the first Mt. Washington which was used mainly for carrying freight and mail up the lake, but later transported passengers. The Mount burned at the Weirs in 1939 and was replaced with the present Mount Washington in 1940. The present Mount was formerly the Chateaugay, a stell hull, cut in sections and transported from Lake Champlain under the direction of Captain Leander La Vallee.
