The narrative mentions that Thomas Plant was eccentric and emulated Napoleon. In his quest to buy all the property between the castle and the lake, one property owner refused so Plant had his workers construct a spite wall which blocked the property owner's view of the lake. There is even a photo of this wall in the historical collection at the Alton Public Library.
