Like the above, this "ski belt" was required by NH law back in the 60s. While wearing one, I was nearly knocked unconscious after a fall at only 26-MPH. (The "wind" got knocked out of me).
Read the disclaimers inside all newly-manufactured PFDs: They're not tested for certain aspects that could be important to you—particularly regarding PFDs for children.

Most people wore those belts back in the day. It seems only slalom skiers and jumpers wore a vest.

For about 24.95, the Parafunalia Store in Gilford sells similar waterski or swimmer's belts in bright yellow in four sizes; s-m-l-xl. They work totally super-duper for kayaking, or whenever you want a pfd that's much less bulky than the regular pfd ...... like for sailing a small sailboat......or rowing a rowboat..... plus...... they work great for swimming because......just like a nuclear powered submarine, they can be adjusted by an inch or two, up or down, to get the best balance and buoyancy for doing the breast stroke, side stroke, or overhand crawl, plus the backstroke.
