Bird-on-the-Wing was a fanciful name used by our forebears for this tiny woodland flower. A fairly common native wildflower, it is probably little known because of its tiny size and its habit of growing very close to the ground. Like many native wildflowers, it must finish flowering early, before the trees leave out and make sunlight scarce on the forest floor. The commonly accepted name for it these days is fringed polygala.

They look like the tiny alpine flowers that grow on the mountains in Switzerland. Very pretty.
