About 15 years ago I was roaming the northern slope of Mt Major, preparing to create a hiking map of the Belknaps, when I came across a dying beech tree that had completely grown around a cross-cut saw that had been either left in the tree when only partially cut through or left leaning on it, decades before. Seeing that saw locked within the middle of a tree was a real curiosity, so I decided to make a trail to the site, so that others could see this unusual phenomenon - the trail was then continued on to the top of the mountain, not too far away. A few years ago the dying tree was brought to the ground in a storm - someone noticed it and apparently came back with tools one day, removed the saw from the ground, and fastened it to the trunk of another tree so that people taking the trail could still at least see the by-then fairly well-known (to hikers) saw. Note that the part of the saw that was encased within the tree shows less weathering than the rest.
