Seen in same wet area as shown in the previous photo. Often called Black Alder, the Winterberry is a tall shrub which often occupies wet and swampy areas. Its greenish or yellowish-white blossoms are neither attractive nor conspicuous, but the numerous resulting bright-red fall berries, which often persist throughout the winter, can be objects of real beauty when they ripen in the fall. They're often eaten during winter by ruffed grouse, cedar waxwings and other birds, and people sometimes gather branchlets of them in quantity for use as long-lasting winter bouquets.
