From early to mid-summer, throughout almost every section of NH, the wood lily can be found in bloom in the woods and glades of our wild lands. It grows up to 3 ft tall and has a reddish orange color, highlighted by purple spots. This plant was seen recently near the top of Red Hill in Moultonboro. It was once considered as a possibility for the state flower of NH, but lost out in that contest to the purple lilac, which is not a native flower like the wood lily is. The Indians once used it as a source of food and medicine. It is becoming more scarce these days and should not now be picked for such purposes.
