This photo is from a promotional brochure with no date. The only clue may be that the brochure features the Mount Washington before it was dubbed the S. S. Mt. Washington. Does anyone know when the name was changed?

Mike,

I sent this picture to a friend of mine who is an ex- Boston & Maine employee and history buff, and this is his response.

"Picture was taken between 1948 and 1954.

Train is the Boston to Montreal "Alouette" which was dieselized in 1948 and was transferred over to the White River line when the Plymouth to Woodsville section of the B&M was torn-up".

Wonderful photo McDude!

In 1942 the steamboat company, which owned the S.S. Mt. Washington went into bankruptcy. After that, the steam engines were commandeered for war service by the U.S. Coast Guard and the ship was laid up for the duration of the war.

In 1946 the new owners of the Mt. Washington II outfitted her with two 615 horsepower diesel engines, thus S.S. (Steam Ship) was no longer appropriate. Finally there was a slight change in the name and the S.S. Mt. Washington II became the M.V. (Motor Vessel) Mount Washington, without the II and the full spelling of Mount.

April 30, 1983 she was re-commissioned the M/S (Motor Ship) Mount Washington after having been lengthened by 24 feet.
