In the 1800's Devils Den Mt in New Durham was a well-known recreation site, visited by tourist and locals alike for the purpose of exploring the relatively large cave (for NH) found within the cliff seen here. The cave was rather narrow, but went into the interior of the cliff for over 50 ft, and then required an exit route up through an opening in the top which was accessed by ladder. The top-most slab of rock seen here is only a few yards from the exit hole. These days the mountain is not nearly as well-known, and is somewhat difficult to access as all the old roads to it are now Class 6. However it is still visited by locals who know of it and by 'outlanders' who have been told of its existence. The cave entrance is at a level much higher than the base of the cliff from which the photo was taken.
