In this view we see 2 well-known features of the local viewscape to the west, the Uncanoonuc Mountains and Joe English Hill, both of which are names from the area's Indian past. When the Indians named the pair of neighboring mountains at the left they seem to have been stirred by their erotic imagination. Joe English Hill, tho a name applied by the white settlers of the area, referred to a lone Indian who remained behind after the rest of his tribe fled the area as the English moved in. He adapted to his new existence well enough to be given a 'Christian' name and was able to live peacefully with his white neighbors - at some time this mountain was named for him (perhaps he lived at the base of it). The Uncanoonucs are close to Concord (note the several cell towers on one), and Joe English Hill is in New Boston. Bean Hill, only 10 miles away, is in Northfield, near Tilton.
