Mt Mack is near the center of the Belknap Range, just south of Mt Klem and immediately SE of Round Pond. It has open ledges on its N and W slopes that provide fine views. Here we are looking due west - Piper is the mountain occupying the center midground; to its west, in the far background, is Mt Kearsarge; to Piper's far right is the SW slope of Mt Belknap; the rather flat, spruce dominated summit in the right midground is Suncook Mt; the northernmost part of Mack Ridge is seen in the immediate foreground. Piper is a popular hiker's destination because its long, rather flat summit has many open ledgy spots that provide outstanding views in nearly every direction. Most impressive, perhaps, are the expansive views southerly from the very large area of open ledge at the southern end of the summit, visible at the left end of the summit in this photo. Some distance down the mountainside, below those ledges, you can see what is one of the range's largest rockslides - the Valley View Trail gives hikers a chance to really challenge themselves by leading them up over that slide; only the fittest and most experienced hikers should try that however because it has difficult terrain and is very steep in many places, especially up over the rock slide, and no one should try it in wet or icy conditions when it can be quite dangerous in those spots.
