Canaan Mt is the 2nd mountain to the east from Mt Shaw - it has an open, ledgy site, known as The Ledge, on its southerly slope which provides fine views. The Dave Green Trail from Camp Merrow Vista by Dan Hole Pond provides relatively easy access to the view site. Dan Hole Pond is considered by some geologists to be filling an old volcanic vent from the period several hundred million years ago when serious volcanic activity was the rule in this area. Note that the long, narrow Oak Hill might be seen as the rim of a collapsed volcano. The many open ledgy sites seen on Big Ball Mt make that a fine peak to climb to enjoy grand views.
