This tiny plant is highly adaptable and has established itself in differing environments all over the globe. It is a wild geranium with very finely cut fern-like leaves which have the remarkable feature of turning bright red to bronze when grown in the sun. In our area they are found primarily in woodlands, and in such shaded areas the leaves remain green. It is sometimes called 'Stinky Bob' since it can give off a musky odor if the leaves are crushed or if clumps of it are dug up. It doesn't stink if left unmolested. Unsubstantiated claims suggest that the odor causes asthma in some people - rubbing the crushed leaves on the body also is said to be a way to repel mosquitoes. The tiny flowers bloom from early spring through late fall. Around here, it seems to favor rocky woodlands to grow in.
