This may be old news, but I recently noticed that The Kona Mansion is up for sale for a cool $7,995,900. With 85 acres, I doubt it will stay as one lot for long.

I noticed that it includes a rail siding. That is great, I can just pull up my private dining rail car

I'm hoping a developer do not buy the property. One of the very few places on the water with that much acreage. Sadly there is too much greed on the lake. Beautiful summer camps being developed into McMansions.
It will be nice if they deed the land to LRCT or to the town and lease the premises out. I have been to the Kona Mansion for years. I remember back in the '50's it was the Kona Farm and my Dad use to pick up milk there. During the late '60's, early 70's, they rented out the carriage house to Belknap College students.

You mean you didn't know? The original owners dug a tunnel. It starts in Meredith, over by the Winni RR station and emerges just behind JoJo's (in case they needed to pick up some beer and steak tips) then swings over to Kona Mansion.

From the listing:
EXISTING USE Other FINANCING APOD Available, Possible Owner Finance FLOORS Metal FOUNDATION Field Stone, Pier/Column FUEL Coal HEATING/COOLING Gravity PARKING 1-10 Spaces, Garage ROOF Membrane TRANSPORT Rail Spur Siding, Other I believe the rail siding connects to the underground cow tunnels that I tell my wife is the winter home of the cows on the neck. ![]() ![]() |

In my humble opinion, greedy would be like telling my parents to sell the house they raised six children in for less than it's worth. Land, they are not making anymore of it. I like a lot of people don't agree with all of the development around the lake and the McMansions but if zoning laws permit it then voters need to change it. Having been on the lake for almost 35 years it has changed and IMHO not for the better but you can't limit someones ability to sell the property they've owned and loved and make a profit. I wish that towns would look long and hard when permits are issued that affect the area as a whole and keep some common sense, growth for the sake of a quick buck isn't always a solution but can bite you long term.

So here is the thing folks, don't get to worried about the Kona Massion getting all subdivied and developed up. At least for a while.... at ~8 million I don't think anyone is going to venture out on that gamble to quick....
Also I seem to remember this going up for sale some odd time back before and there was all kinds of talk of development etc. that went know where. It might be that although there is plenty of land and room, that because the property and grounds does have some historic value, that doing the devolopment isn't as easy as it always first appears. This is all of course speculation.... But I do remember talk of condo's etc. at Kona back in the late 80's and early 90's and nothing ever materialized from it.

Maybe I'll win the lottery before this place sells. Then you won't have to worry about developers, just my in-laws!

For that amount of money, I wish you could actually see some better pictures. Seems to be a pretty cool place.
