First Day Franklin

The traditional kayak run of the Winnipesaukee River, ending at the Trestle dam in Franklin. January 1, 2010.

Not to cold, no wind, overcast for good light, plenty of kayakers (eventually). Drew the usual collection of cameras to the bridge over the river.

Really cool(cold) pictures! I love the way you captured the movement of the water. Looks like everyone was having fun. Thanks for sharing

The flow on the Wini River is directly related to the flow at the dam at Lakeport that controls the release from the Lake Winnipesaukee. Of course there is a delay involved.

The levels in the photos from 1/1/2010 looked a little higher than average winter release levels that I recall, used to paddle the run all winter. It could be that the current lake level called for it.

The Wini River is normally open all winter due to the warmer lake water being the source and moderate release levels at Lakeport being the norm for Winter.

You can see a graph of the levels at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?01081000 and you can go back 60 days. The current 1,260 CFS level is cooking along, make it a class IV run with the winter conditions on the river.
