Hey man, isn't the route 28A side of the lake the eastern side of the lake. I believe it is, that's why they call it the East Alton Grocery Store.

So if its the east side of the lake, wouldn't the poster be right that its the west side of the shore?

Oh my goodness, just think of the environmental catastrophe happening this winter ! Another vehicle through the ice, making it what, 5 or 6 or 7 this year alone. That we know of ? Each one of these SUVs (submerged underwater vehicles) has what, a 22 - 30+ gallon gas tank. Why there's potentially more gas in Winni this year from these SUVs alone than potentially from all the sunk snomobiles in all the lakes. Unreal ! And that's not mentioning the time, expense and danger to the emergency personnel that occur whenever some moron goes Capt Nemo. I tell you all, we must rise up, rise up I say, and tell the legislators in no uncertain terms - ban driving on ice ! Driving on ice, a sport for total ... err ... wait ... driving isn't even a sport.

ps - on the silver lining side of things; does anyone know if petroleum products kill milfoil ?

pps -

Default why did it go thru the ice?

The Alton Bay festival was only a couple weeks ago, with cars, trucks and airplanes on the ice. The ice was reported as very thick.

Why did this particular truck go thru the ice? Was it near an aerator? Or near an area of known current?

Today we drove by the spot where the vehicle went through the ice. It was only about 50' from shore, and it was fairly close to some houses and docks. The ice around the hole where the vehicle went through looked wet and slushy. Alton Bay itself still looked safe, and there were many trucks, trailers, cars and several airplanes out there on the ice this afternoon.

Let's ban aerators and recirculating pumps before we ban driving on the ice.

Gasoline simply evaporates, the gas tanks of all vehicles are sealed, unless someone leaves the cap off.....not likely. The vehicles are recovered quickly, really not an issue. Drop the talk of "banning" based on emotions...

Treerider,

From a prior debate I had with Mee'n'Mac I think I can tell when there is a serious post and one with tongue in cheek. I think this was the later.

Am I right Mee'n'Mac?

Wrong. If we use the logic of banning driving on the ice then we better be ready to ban BOATS that might also sink and pollute the lake, that goes for sail boats as well that might have a small kicker..., lets see what else we can ban....how about Ice Augers, after all they can also spill gas and oil not to mention all snowmobiles and 4 wheelers. While we are at it lets BAN all lawns along the lake cause after all we all KNOW that EVERYONE fertilizes their lawns...did I miss anything, I am sure I did..

sorry to burst your bubble but if the fuel tank was sealed you would not get gas out without collapsing the tank.take it from a tech that been doing it for 20 years.in order to get fuel out you need to let air in this means it has to be vented

"Wrong. If we use the logic of banning driving on the ice then we better be ready to ban BOATS that might also sink and pollute the lake ... "

First let me clear up any misinterpretation. ToW was correct in that I was (very much) being tongue in cheek in my earlier post.
Second your response (above) is pretty much the point I was trying to make, via some hopefully humorous, lampooning of prior posts on cross topics. Far too often I see (and I certainly don't mean just on this forum) people getting emotional about Activity A due to drawbacks X, Y and Z. "Ban A" I hear, it's "stupid, immoral, look at the damages X, Y and Z it causes", etc, etc. Yet when Activity B has demonstrates X, Y and Z there's no outcry. Always makes me think that X, Y and Z aren't the real issues, just justifications. People dislike A and like B and come up with reasoning to support the former. I have no qualms with people disliking certain activities and stating so (even vigorously debating so). I just wish we as homo-sapiens applied a bit more logic to our reasoning, at least when it comes to legislating away certain choices. It's all fine and well to debate the merits of Cherry Garcia vs Chunky Monkey but I would hope nobody take such a debate seriously enough to propose legislation banning Chunky Monkey (Cherry Garcia rules ! at least all intelligent people think so ).
Lastly I was having some fun with the newspaper article on sunken sleds. Seems the writer was working to find every potentially sensational thing to say. The writer in the article "madrasahs" posted was a bit more even handed I thought.
