Default Dinner at the Wolfeboro Inn

We had a great dinner at the Wolfeboro Inn (Wolfe's Tavern) last night. The new soup/salad bar was great. We shared a French Onion Soup (excellent and we've had it lots of places) and then we tried the Special: Spare Ribs, and they were FABULOUS; As tender, juicy, and succulent as we've ever had and the pan-dripping sauce was browned; thick and rich, more like a gravy. The mashed potato with the goat and cheddar cheese was perfect with it, and the bean/corn salsa with its extra zip was a nice surprise. We would both order it again. The new chef also served a neat little selection of pesto, olive oil and whipped butter with the fresh bread. Service was fine too.

My husband and I not only ate several meals at the Wolfeboro Inn last week but stayed two nights. As long time patrons of the Inn (over 20 years), we read the various negative messages regarding the Inn. We had to see for ourselves. From the moment we checked in to the minute we checked out, I cannot say a negative word about the service, food, appearance, price etc. While I am quite sure the negative responses during the opening weeks were true, I have to say, we did not encounter any of them. It still is The Wolfeboro Inn but every aspect of the facility has been updated. Even the moose in Wolfe's Tavern has been groomed and looks great! Just as soon as the weather clears, we plan to make another visit. This time our stay will be longer.

Great to hear good reviews. Our family was up for a visit last weekend and we went to the Inn for dinner on Friday night. We were a party of 5 adults and one toddler. No waiting, good food. Everything was terrific. They even went out of their way to make sure our little one was happy.

Good catch!

Went there a couple of times in early June. First time, a customer had the turkey pot pie which looked good; served in a cast iron skillet with a nice looking crust. One of us ordered it. The food arrived with the server saying that they were out of the turkey pot pie. One of us had to wait for another dish while others watched while the food got cold (return to kitchen; ain't happening here). Next visit I decided to order the turkey pot pie and it came with two biscuits on top instead of the crust with maybe a couple of chunks of turkey, a couple of morsels of vegetable and the sauce; no joke! "What happened to the crust"? Server said that people up here prefer the biscuits on top instead of the crust. That being said, I returned it and just enjoyed a drink.

Question: Are biscuits preferred?

Anyway, we really want to see the tavern return with good food like it used to be and are willing to give them another shot; at least the rest of the summer to get things together. We'll try again in late summer when we're up again.

Having been born and raised in Central New Hampshire and being served food from my grandmothers that had lived in New Hampshire and Vermont since the early 1900's. I would have to say that is the first time I have ever heard of "Pot Pie" of any kind being served without a top crust.

I believe you were served what some folks refer to as "#$%^ on a shingle" with biscuits instead of bread. In my family it is customary to make this with the left over chicken or turkey, vegi's and a flower based gravy with seasoning. My mother enjoys this meal as I make it the same way that her grandmother used to make it. It is the number one thing I look forward to after a big turkey or chicken roast, besides a nap.

Default data

It would be real interesting to know:

--How many forum members make their first (or second or third) post about a restaurant?

--Of that group, how many of them ever post about any other topic?

Actually, it was my 6th in 2004. But I usually post about food/restaurants 'cause I don't know much about anything else. I may have opinions, but "knowing" is different. I do look more carefully at early posts about restaurants, particularly when the opinions are different from what has been posted before. Also, no need for a new thread, when there are adequate old ones covering the same subject. Nonetheless, every new poster can add something to the discussion and we welcome them.
