Good day all!
I need your help! I'm writing a book about the history of the boathouses of Lake Winnipesaukee. I've spent an awful lot of time this past summer in my 1948 CC Sportsman cruising the lake and spotting boathouses. I'm asking for help in gathering information about your favorite boathouses and the stories behind them. Here is a link to my photos so far: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25518315@N07/ Please let me hear from you all! Alan Gamble metals@gmail.com |

Fascinating idea!! A photopost search will lead you to some postcard images of boathouses on the lake....some of which may still be there today!

For instance, this yellow boathouse may still be seen today along Rt. 28A ![]() Lincoln Cottage (Gilford) with boathouse made to match features of the house.... ![]() Some time ago Justsold posted many boathouse photos. He may be an excellent resource to contact. GOOD LUCK!!! McD PS - Don't forget the Spider Web boathouse! ![]() (photo credit: Rattlesnake Gal) |

Mitt Romney's Wolfeboro place has a very nice, 3-bay boathouse that you may want to include.

![]() ![]() This Wolfeboro Neck home/boathouse on Umbrella Point in Wolfeboro was originally built by a Walgreen and was kept by the ex-wife when they divorced. The link to the interactive website still works. |

I would LOVE to include this boathouse. Does anyone know the Romney family well enough for an introduction?

I live at the boathouse at Sandy Island Family Camp, at least when my husband and I are there, mostly weekends. (We're there early to get the camp set up before our first group Memorial Day, and we're just finishing putting the place to bed for the winter.) I realize we're not the most picturesque, but I'd rather be authentic, than over-the-top.
Upstairs in the boathouse was originally storage - army cots, I believe - until my husband and some friends on staff at Sandy started to make it into living quarters. The floor has several levels, to make the wheelhouse of the old "Big Sandy" fit underneath. This means the make-shift shower stall is in the living room - the only place that there's enough headroom in the eaves. As originally it was a bunch of young men in their early 20's, it wasn't any big issue. That was 40 years ago, but some things are hard to change! |

That sounds like a great place to spend the summer! I had been told it was illegal to sleep in a boathouse though. Are you grandfatherred or was I misinformed? |

Al,
Your idea is a great one. I took photos of boat houses on the lake a few years back and posted them here. I myself was very interested in the history of these many boat houses on the lake. Take a look at some of my photos. Here is one that really caught my eye. Please note the unique plumbing connection. It is located just outside of Alton Bay on The Woodlands shoreline facing East. And a view from the water: Below is the first place my family rented in the late 50's in Alton Bay West side and at that time there was a boat slip under but that is now living space. It was called Mujekeewee - not sure that is the correct spelling

Making any modification to a boathouse over public waters that makes it more suitable for use as a dwelling is prohibited under RSA 482-A:26.

I suggest you contact the New Hampshire Boat Museum at their website www.nhbm.org and see if they could help. This summer and last summer they sponsored a tour of Lake boat houses which they may be able to share with you.
