Exclamation Alton Winterfest Cancelled

The Alton Parks and Recreation Department has announced that the Alton Winterfest, originally scheduled for Sunday February 18, has been cancelled due to unsafe ice conditions. This means the mighty Winnipesaukee.com "Forum Flyer" entry in the Winterfest's bed race will, once again, have to wait another year to prove its superiority over all the other entries.

Oh great. I hope they don't influence the derby officials.

Default Sad excuse

I think they just fear us Forum Flyers and this is their way of bowing out gracefully. I hope there is enough ice by early Feb. so at least the fishing derby is a go.

Default Tough Decision

At our January meeting, we discussed the festival, and unanimously felt that with right at a month to go, and at the time no ice to be seen in the bay, the likelihood of having sufficient ice to accomodate a large group of people, and possibly a large group of airplanes, was highly unlikely.

Rather than have folks make reservations to come up, we felt it prudent to cancel, and then if folks still want to come up and enjoy the lake that weekend,, safe ice or not, they could make that decision.

I didn't even bring up full moon snowshoe walks, because again at the time, we had no snow!!! If we are able to something in February, we can announce it via the Baysider, the sign board at Parks and Rec, and I can do a posting. So far, the little snow doesn't even say "Let's go snowshoeing".

Happy winter, and keep a good thought for a safe and successful fishing derby.

As much as I hate to hear that UP, I agree. That's a lot of weight to hold with only a month left to make ice. The derby is my favorite time of year and I hope it's still a go for not only my fun, but for the economy up there.

Thumbs up Thanks, UTS

Thank you for the update on the Parks & Recreation decision. Of course, I realize safety is the utmost concern (our bed race team will just have to wait till 2008). With an extra year of training we should really be able to kick butt!

Despite the cancellation of the festivities, we will still be driving up from Joisey to spend the long holiday weekend. It's a great way to see old friends, enjoy the fresh air, and contribute to the NH economy. It would be nice if there were more snow and ice before we arrive, as long as the weather isn't rotten the day we plan to travel up.

Default Safety First...

Sorry the Festival is cancelled again...but it was considerate to give sufficient time so people could cancel their plans...
As for the forum flyer, a retrofit could be in order something on the lines of pontoons... I know "the man" that could get this done...Oh yes but theres the issue of walking on water Have faith, we will be back!

DRH,
Have you been paid the storage fees yet for storing the "Forum Flyer"?

Pepper escapes another ride too!

Nope, haven't seen a cent yet for the storage fees. However, we'll continue to make sure the "Forum Flyer" is kept safe and sound in its "Undisclosed Location", ready to take on all comers next year!

Far better to owe it to you than to cheat you out of it .
