I need a gas powered ice auger... What is a good brand? Anybody know of any good deals on a new or used one?

Well Woodsy,FLL would tell you to go to WallyWorld and buy a hand auger for $12 and a large can of B&M beans.You can probably figure out the rest.

Hi - AJ's bait shop in Meredith, close to Town Hall, has a variety and then you'll be supporting a local business and not the big bad ogre Wal-Mart, plus it's a 'reel' fishing store.

There's a new StrikeMaster Strike Lite 4 stroke on the Market. 20 pounds, fast, quiet and durable (also starts on 1st or second pull every time and doesn't require premixing of oil). I love mine and for the 499. it's well worth the money as the 4 stroke is going to rule the Market soon for the Gas Augers. The Ice Team used this model all winter last year and had not a single problem. If you are looking to save money, I would keep my eyes out for a good deal on a used auger in good condition

Effectively, a 48" corkscrew with an off-set handle on top, the hand powered ice augers have two cutting blades that last a long time between resharpenings and make fast work of cutting a 4" diameter hole. Price - about 45 dollars.

I agree, you should start with a hand auger. If you're just getting into the sport you'll appreciate learning the way the rest of did it. Don't go too cheap on the hand auger, go see Alan and he'll hook you up with a good unit. The newer style seraded(spell?) edges cut very well. You'll drill 30 18" holes a day on your own with a new hand auger with a good design; and still call it fun.
