Hiked Mt Major this morning. Took the Brook trail down. At about the halfway point to left of trail about 50 ft into the woods I see an old oil tank. The kind you would have in your basement. A large tank that would hold hundreds of gallons and must weigh quite a bit. I have never noticed it before but have never hiked this late in fall so the lack of leaves brought it into view. I always bring a little bag with me and pick up any trash I come across. Sorry but couldn't fit this into my bag. Question-How and why would something like that be in that spot?

The oil tank had been there a long time when we first saw it more than 20 years ago. Back then it was closer to the trail. At that time and earlier there was 4WD access up there. Not uncommon to find things like junk cars, washing machines, etc deep in the woods from long ago.

I've not seen the oil tank out there, but remember that much of the area in the Belknaps is private and, historically, used for hunting, old camps, etc.
