Winn Divers, Senter Cover Guy, Any Other AquaNuts...

How's the viz been in the big pond? Since that cold, rainy Sunday in mid-May when Senter Cove Guy and I found ourselves "airless" and couldn't dive, I've been wondering about conditions. Seems the turbidity was a bit high in May...has that calmed down at all?

Heading up on 6/30 for an extended July 4th holiday and hoping to get a handful of dives in. Any reports????

And -- Senter Cover Hombre -- e-mail me if you want to dive over the holiday weekend. I'd love to do the Fri & Sun DWC charters and perhaps a trip to Diamond Island or Welch or Rum Point. Doesn't matter to me...the more the merrier...(or wetter)...

I spend all my free time in mooring field hell and it all looks the same... Muck!

I had my regulator serviced a couple of weeks ago by the factory agent. His comment to me was, "Do you ever dive in water or do you just go for the mud holes? I've never seen equipment is bad before." My response was: I spend most of my dive time working on moorings, need I tell you what that is like? His reply was, “I see”.

We're changing over to all stainless steel at the Club so my job should be a lot easier as time go on... So I thought, actually I find all sorts of things to keep me busy down there, not even the best stuff last long in this lake.

Visibility? Well, actually it has been very good this year, although, it gets dark after 40' depth and cold too. Keep you dives above that and it's like mid summer diving... rather pleasant.

As much as I would like to, I won't be joining you on any DWS tours, the operators have banned me because they don't want any of their divers picking up my bad diving habits. Truth be known, they just don't want me getting their boat covered in mud.

Did a check-out dive with my kids last Sunday off Steamboat -- getting geared up for a mid-July family live-aboard trip to Belize. The thermocline was at about 20-25 ft there (Low 60's at the top, 50 degrees at the bottom!). Water was more turbid than usual for this time of year, I thought.

Can't wait to be in warm waters with a lot less rubber on!

Bad habits, schmad schmabits...You wouldn't believe the joker I got buddied with last weekend. Although I was quite grateful for his loan of a shiny new pressed steel 120, I was mortified by his underwater immitation of a Duncan yo-yo and his insistence on keeping the power inflator in his hand...(inflate...purge...inflate...purge...rocket up...sink like a rock...rocket up...sink like a rock...feet down, mask completely fogged..."I don't need a stinking hood!") My other (competent) buddy and I nearly broke our necks watching him. Scary.

I didn't dive but the water seemed to be on the dark brown side in Alton Bay. The surface temp was in the high 60s - low 70s. It should be warming up fast now. Good luck! Remember to keep breathing!

As always, it depends where you go. This weekend, surface temp at Clark's Point was 70. Thermocline at 25 feet, 66 degrees. Lady of the Lake, 66 at surface, 59 degrees at 26 feet. Empty Pockets, 51 degrees at depth. Vis is tough 10 - 20 with the excessive pollen in the water. Obviously, different at each temp range.

DWC has started charters.

Thanks for the report -- I was wondering how the pollen was impacting the viz. It seems everything got started a bit later this year, so I figured pollen was peaking now.

Oh well -- no biggie. Just more of the same northeastern diving conditions -- cold, dark, murky! Won't stop me from getting on the Friday and Sunday DWC charters this week!
