Hi All
I have a question to ponder. A good friend just purchased a used boat that has a name ..Is it bad karma for them to change it to there liking or is that just an old wives tale? |

It's probably just and old wive's tale, but we bought an antique and didn't change the name. But if I really didn't like the name, and it was my choice alone, I think I would change it and not worry. How superstitious are you?

Make sure the boat is not coast guard registered under the existing name. If so and you care about being cg registered (documented) you can file an amendment.

As I understand the "rules" of it, you can change the boat's name without insulting the boat/Neptune if you do it shortly after aquiring it. After that, you are "supposed to" throw a party and offer sacfrifices of liquor to the boat/water gods.

I heard it is bad luck to change the name of an already named boat. But if you are not a superstitious person then go for it.

You could change the name to: "Looking For Trouble".
![]() PS: I believe the Original name of the Titanic was rumored to have been Gigantic. EDIT: NOPE: The Gigantic became the Britannic...all three..sisterships of the White Star Line. |

... It’s bad luck to change the name of a boat. but if you have to: write the soon-to-be-exorcised name on a piece of paper, fold the paper, and place it in a small cardboard or wooden box. Burn the box. Scoop up the ashes and throw them into the sea on an outgoing tide. If you live on a lake, do it at night and only during a new moon. River dwellers should send the ashes downstream.

It is not bad luck to change the name of a newly acquired boat. It is bad luck and unproper to change the name of a boat that you already own. This was settled in one of the yachting magazines after much debate.
