McDuff Engines
Nice article on McDuff engines (made in Lakeport) in the Winnipesaukee Times.
Jeff Fay collects them: http://www.faysboatyard.com/articles/mcduff.html

I plan to stop by and take a look at his collection, now that we know what Jeff does in the Winter. Jeff is a very good mechanic and a hard worker. (He keeps the 1976 Slickcraft running). Nice to see that he finds time for this great hobby.

Whats Up McDuff ?
My brother Warren Taylor, Birch Island, owned a Johnson Laker, circa 1906 "ESSEX" that originally had a McDuff engine. I think the engine became a door stop at Fay's and was in use as that for many years. The 'ESSEX" is still alive and on Lake Sunset or Suncook (I think)down off of Rte 28.
WJT2 PS I agree Jeff is a great guy who happens to have great mechanical skills as well. |

Engines Are Wonderful...
A part of my Life!
They all still amaze me, and I have been known to figure out some problems with and fix them for most of my Life!... Terry ____________________________________________

McDuff Machine Co.
Here is a little added information on the McDuff Machine Co. from research I have done.
William J. McDuff sold the company to George K. Gile and Edward M. Sanders in December 1920. George A. Collins, in partnership with George A. Quimby, purchased it from them in February 1922. Both Quimby and Collins were druggists and operated drug stores in Lakeport. Quimby's Drug Store was located in the IOOF building (street level) in Lakeport Square and Collins' Drug Store was at 59 Elm Street (where Wanda's Beauty Shop is today). George A. Collins (1868-1934) was an entrepreneur and had extensive real estate holdings around the area. Among them was the Bear Island House, which he owned and operated from 1909 to 1922. He also had at least part interest in an ice house on Paugus Bay, but I have been unable to ascertain its exact location. Laconia City Directories of the 1920's to 1934 (the year of his death) lists him as president of McDuff's and his son, George P. as treasurer. He was also president of a Dodge - Plymouth dealership in the early 1930's, with his son as treasurer. The 1940 City Directory lists "McDuff Marine Corp., boat building, repairing and renting, 65 Gold St., Lakeport; pres-treas Augustine S. Francis" |

Pictures of the Laker
This is a pic I took of a picture of the Essex. I don't have any digital photos of it at the moment. Can you tell me anything more about it? Do you know where the original ESSEX brass nameplate is? I have been told the boat had been passed through many of the Birch Island homeowners. It was a barn find for me the day before Christmas in the mid-ninetys, it had been unloved for many years. I have had it on Pleasant Lake in Deerfield, NH for most years since then. I would love to hear any history or stories you have!
