This guy/gal scared the Bajesus out of me when I walked out my front door just now. He was lounging on my deck in the sun, until I almost stepped on it.
Wow. Talk about having a coronary event. ![]() ![]() ![]() He/she was around last summer too. I think it lives under my deck in a large hole. I saw it when I was doing some adding on to the deck but didn't think it was a ground hog. I thought maybe a skunk or something. Funny but when I was staining the deck last weekend I thought I smelled something like a wet dog under there. I guess I know now! ![]() |

Could be, it's free hand-outs of sunflower seeds, or something, that attracted it?

Nope. I don't feed the animals. I only have a humming bird feeder. It has been living somewhere around here for a while. Posted pics of it from last year as well. I only see it maybe once or twice a year. It just shows up now and then, just to keep me on my toes.

I used to plant a garden and fought the woodchucks (groundhogs) for years. Finally gave up planting and haven’t seen one around since. I wrote this poem while in the midst of my annual battle trying to outsmart those pesky critters.
Ode To A Woodchuck Woodchuck poked his furry head, From the hole beneath my shed, Watched with awe and great suspense, As I put up my garden fence, And as I pounded the last pin, Pondered how he might get in, While I, in confidence assured, Tender veggies were secured. A glint of mischief in his eyes, Fixed his gaze upon the prize, Undeterred that cunning beast, Lay prepared to have a feast. And in spite of lofty plans, Foiled them all and in he ran! Once again I have been zapped, By that malicious little chap, He chucked all that he could see, And never left one bean for me! |

I cut down a good size tree in the yard and the sections are laying on the lawn. So now I am wondering:
How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? |

Thanks Steve, I just told my wife that there is less than 700 lbs of wood on the lawn and the woodchuck will take care of it. No need for me to bother!

When we moved in to our house 8 years ago, there was a family of three living in my front yard. I have about a third of an acre - just a little house lot, really. Place a house, pool, driveway and swingset on that and I have a postage stamp of a yard. That's where the rodents were living. They were cute but they weren't around for long... But our neighbour across the street, Joe, decided to name them all "bang", like you've suggested. So, when we talk of "Joe" it's to the tune of Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe"... Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand I'm going down to shoot some woodchucks You know, I've caught 'em messin' around all over my land I'm going down to shoot some woodchucks You know, I've caught her messin' around all over my land And that ain't too cool |

As Carl Spackler says in Caddy Shack "License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote. "
