It looks like we will have three rounds of snow in the next several days with the total accumulation from the three events of 12" to 14" around the lake. Each storm should be bigger than the storm before it, but when they are over, we should have more than a foot.

The Sunday night/early Monday storm could be a major event. If so, we will may approach or exceed 16" from the three events.

Christmas is looking WHITE!

I hope those down south get their power restored in the middle of all of the white stuff. Most of us here in the Lakes Region dodged a major bullet on the ice storm (although my basement is a wreck).

The lakes region is now under a winter weather advisory for a snowfall of up to 6 inches, Friday afternoon and night.

This is the result of a storm getting organized over the middle of the nation and it will move east quickly, passing just south of Long Island tomorrow night. Any change in the storm track to the north or to the south will also adjust the snow belt the same amount of distance.

Right now it appears that an average of 6 inches will fall in the Concord area with higher amounts south of there, and lesser amounts to the north. I would say 4 inches as an average for the lake. Boston and Hartford will get a foot out of this one.

I agree with R2B, keep your eyes on Sunday night.

The combination of heavy snow and extreme cold that we are expecting in the next week should be a VERY good thing for the NH ski economy with Christmas vacation coming up, and this is a make-or-break time of year for the ski areas. The extreme cold that will occupy us in between snowstorms will allow the ski areas to blast their slopes with their own snow on top of what falls.

The National Weather Service put the lakes region in an expanded winter storm warning for this storm tonight.

I am now expecting an average of 7 inches along the southern side of the lake, and 5 inches along the north side of the lake. The jackpot is going to be south of the MA border for this one, where more than a foot will fall in many areas.

Lots of folks in the Nashua/Milford/Amherst are still have no power. I hope this isn't a heavy wet snow, the crews and the familys really could use a little break from Mother Nature.

I share your concern about the people still without power. I think this snow will be light as the temps will stay cold. There will be a good amount of wind on the back side and that will cause a lot of drifting.

It may have been a bit better for everyone if the snow was wetter because it would not blow around. The drifting and 'ground blizzard' conditions tonight might be hard to deal with.

This is a very dry fluffy snow. Temp is now 11 at Black Cat, and falling. Still several more hours of snow to come.

The snow is a good insulator, once on the roof in the right amount. Those without power will be able to use temporary heat sources more efficiently with snow on the roof to help hold the heat in. Snow has a lot of air whipped into it, and the air pockets provide the insulation.

The radio announced that power crews were working through this storm to get power back from the ice storm.

SIDE NOTE: This snow falling in the lake water has brought the weather station's water temp down to 32 at the 2-foot depth. The probe at 10 feet down is now 35. That is what the winter temp profile looks like when it's frozen, which means all the lake has to do now is sit still, and it will freeze. Tomorrow I am forecasting a high of 18 for the lakes region, which will cool the water even more. It will be windy, which won't let the water sit still. But it should be ready to freeze very quickly as soon as it does.

A strong coastal storm will hug the northeast coast of the US as it moves past
our area Sunday night. It will spread snow over the lakes region by midday
Sunday and the snow will quickly become heavy. Heavy snow will fall for several
hours on Sunday evening.

This storm will create near-blizzard conditions in areas exposed to the wind,
especially after the storm passes closest to us on Sunday night. Wind will shift
into the west at that time and may gust to 50 mph. With powdery snow expected,
the wind will create snowdrifts and blowing snow may reduce visibility to zero
for a few seconds at a time.

The National Weather Service is advising that travel on Sunday afternoon and
evening be curtailed except in an emergency. If you must set out, be prepared
to get stuck. Carry the items you would need in order to camp in your car until
you are rescued... as well as a reliable form of communication for calling help.

Temperatures will be dropping into the single numbers on Sunday night with very
windy weather. Things will not warm up much on Monday and the wind will continue.
The high temperature on Monday will likely be around 10 degrees. Light snow
will continue as residual moisture hangs around in the wake of the departing
storm. West-facing slopes could get another 4 or 5 inches on Monday. Other
areas may see another inch or two.

At 3:30 on Sunday, its not really that bad. Only 3-4" so far and visibility is pretty good. Is this storm going too quickly out to sea or is it going to move back in on us and give us the foot we are looking for?

The center is near Block Island and deepening rapidly. Pressures are falling very rapidly to the NE of the storm center, so the storm is still moving NE and not out to sea. A dry slot worked its way up from the Manchester area into the lakes region. That dry slot is filling in on radar. Snow should intensify soon.

Thisis still a major storm that will give us 12+ inches and a lot of wind later tonight. It should snow for another six to ten hours.

I am out of state but checked in with someone in Meredith about 3 hours ago (2ish). At that time he said there was about 7 inches on the ground. Where are you? Is he trying to overly dramatic or are you not in the Meredith area?

The back edge of the snow is now close to the lakes region. Therefore, the snow may stop sooner than I had been thinking. It will get windy and the snow will blow, but it is looking like 12"+ may not happen.

I'm in Moultonborough, about 3 miles ENE from Black Cat station and about 8 miles from Meredith. The weather is often different in the three spots. So far, from Friday through 7:30 PM I've picked up about 9-10" - probably 5-6" today. It is still snowing, but visibility never got too bad for long. The winds have started and a gust blew over the Christmas tree on our porch.

9:30 PM update: What was 9-10" is now 13". Winds calm, big flakes. Very light fluffy snow falling

At 10:30 pm on Black Cat Island, the snow total is 9.0 inches for the day. There is light snow and blowing snow. Snow depth is 14 inches.

I agree with R2B on less than 12 inches, although it's possible that with residual moisture left over from the storm, we may get a couple more inches through noon tomorrow. The reason is that the storm drew a little farther south than anticipated, which has brought the heaviest snow belt just a few miles south and east of here. Rochester at 6 pm was reporting 14 inches and they've had a lot more snow since then.

Fearing a wet and heavy snow, my husband had cleared off all of our roof surfaces prior to this one hitting. The roofed entryway to our basement at the back of our house, a spot fairly well protected from wind, has us at 16.5" here in M'Boro. I am off of Bean Rd., can spit the distance to the Center Harbor line, and am about equal distances from the 3 lakes, for location specifics.

There's my entirely unscientific measurement

. It is gorgeous out there! I am off to snap some digi pics and send them south to Philly and Jersey to make all of my relatives (who are currently rain-soaked) completely jealous.
