The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the lakes region for Friday night and Saturday. This is for all of New Hampshire except for Manchester and Keene areas, and all of Maine.

Models are showing well over half-inch of QPF (an umbrella term that means either rain or the melted equiv. of snow) coming... and perhaps up to an inch. With the cold dry air in place (it's 15 on Black Cat right now, after a high of 17) we'll see more of a fluff factor with this storm. The average amount of liquid the models are giving us is 0.75" which would translate into about 10 inches of snow with the fluff factor.

In terms of roof collapses and flood issues I'm becoming more concerned about late Sunday through Tuesday as another snow-to-rain event is looking more likely. If that storm must come we'd be better off with a fluff factor as tomorrow night's storm should have.

The February precipitation total (includes melted equivalent of snow) is now 6.11 inches... about the same amount that produced the Mother's Day Flood of 2006. Friday night could bring it closer to 7 inches. It's all still on the ground, combined with what fell prior to this month, waiting to be unleashed by warmth and rain.

...March means the start of meteorological spring...

At this point it's a pretty sure bet the lakes and rivers are all going to be very high this spring. The only question is whether or not they'll be floodingly high or just high enough to make us nervous. The answer depends on whether or not spring comes quickly or gradually... and we can't predict that... so if you have property to protect, it would be best to form your plan now and monitor this year's winter-to-spring transition as though it were your favorite TV show.

Heavy snow warning posted for Manchester to Keene to Mt Washington valley this morning, 5:00am. Snow to arrive around midnight, end noon on Saturday.

I'll be out snapping pictures of the house and surroundings after the Saturday storm cleanup as I'm guessing that the post-storm snowpack will be at it's max for the season (knock on wood...kind of). Heck, it may be the most snow we ever see on our lawn and it's our first Winter in the house. Anyone selling snowshoes?

In Meredith there was 5" at 8:30 AM and as of now there's 6.25".

I'm off to shovel a couple sections of flatter-pitched roof. Seems like I did that just a couple of weeks ago...........

Seems to be done here in Meredith. Maybe a touch below 8". Not exactly sure where that puts the snowpack, but I'm thinking around 43". As CLP has said, I REALLY hoper this melts slowly. My back is killing me.......

C'mon folks...the webcams are great, but they don't tell the story. Break out those digitals and capture the snow at its peak. The NOAA charts show much of Carroll County under 40-50+ inches of white stuff right now. Let's see some photos! CLA posted a Youtube video that was incredible. Now we need some perspective shots.

(Bonus points for anyone who shoots in and around Melvin Village...)

OK, Grant - how's this? Taken on 03/02/08 at the end of our driveway. The snowbank is about 3' over Quilt Lady's head!

What doesnt show in that photo Grant is how closed in the roads have gotten in urban areas.Some streets are not even passable for two cars.Getting out of driveways is a pretty dangerous with zero visability.Just came back from Cannon Mt and the snowbanks in the Notch are as big as I have ever seen them.What a winter!!

That's Charlie, our German Shepherd "mix". His mother was a Shepherd, but we have no idea what his father was. He came from a shelter.

I'm not so much worried about my roof as I am about my deck. Here's a shot from about a week ago....before 18" or so of new snow! Just out of idle curiosity, I was wondering if the deck collapsed (or someone's roof) would homeowner's insurance cover the loss?

If you have a standard homeowners insurance policy it would cover collapse due to the weight of ice or snow, subject to your deductible, of course.
