Default Roofers

i may or may not catch some negativity on this however im speaking from facts. As a builder and someone who primarily remodels houses i was floored today when i saw the results of a roofing job that was just done. for the first time in 20 years i hired one of the "vans with 20 ladders on top" to do a roofing project. they talked a good game so i hired them. i went back to the job site to pay the foreman the balance and lets just say i was blown away. this remodel is very complicated however the roofers in several places didn't put tarps over the siding top protect the cedar shakes resulting in several areas of scrapes and tar marks all over the siding. the roofing company may or may not get paid after the painter comes in fix there mistakes. i have several pics if anybody wants to PM me. THE LONG AND SHORT OF THIS STORY IS HIRE LOCALS SUPPORT YOUR NEIGHBORS. i have preached this before and now i'm being a hipocrite and have to deal with this. i used quality insulation to spray foam the interior great job from quality insulation. the problem is folks people don't like to wait sorry this is New Hampshire that's why you're moving up here. Real New England folks support and trust there neighbors.

Default Any subcontractors in the area.

Are hit or miss. Most of the good ones went South where the money is!

I have a son in law who is a local contractor/project manager. He knows the good ones. Look for an experience builder/manager and ask.

Ask for a SOW (statement of work). The sleaze balls will walk away.

I'm sure everyone has a story like this!
I once hired a painter to paint a ceder shingled house. One side was peeling really bad, so the guy took an orbital grinder to it. He ruined one whole side of the house.
The house has since been vinyl sided.
The lesson I learned, never take the guy that is available right away!
I actually hired a roofer that I knew from Mass to come to NH to roof my house. He gave me an estimate by looking at the house on google maps. I got a dumpster dropped off. He came up with a large crew, completed it in one day and did it cheaper than anyone up here!

Paint a cedar shingled house? A good painter will steer you away from paint and recommend stain. This would have been a good time to walk away!

Correct you never paint a cedar shake. He sanded it because of someone else’s mistake
