one of the first concerts I ever went to was the beach boys at Mt Cranmore. Maybe 1982

I was surprised to learn the Beach Boys have the most top-40 hits of any American band...

Is the key there "American" and "band"? Michael Jackson, The Beatles, etc. would all be pulled using those two qualifiers.

I think the point is that they were extremely popular despite most people dismissing them a flash-in-the-pan pop group of surfer dudes.. (and I also learned they never surfed)

"Pop" is accurate, but can be misleading. Pet Sounds is one of the greatest albums ever
