Just talking to a friend from Birch Island. He was at a boat yard in Maine earlier today, and the Bear was there (Camp Lawrence boat) for some new plating, paint and a new engine. That's quite a sizeable boat to move back and forth for servicing. I could swear I've seen her, many years ago, on the Center Harbor drydock, so I would think working there would be a lot simpler/cheaper.
I'm also a little surprised that nobody on this Forum mentioned such activity. If the Doris E were being moved, I bet we'd hear about it. Last edited by Descant; 04-11-2024 at 03:55 PM. Reason: fixed typo |

Back in my youth, there were two Camp Lawrence boats; the Camp and the Bear. They looked like they had a previous life as a lobster boat.
They would load up one of the boats with the campers locker boxes and the other carried the campers. When we got out to Camp Lawrence, we went to the Chow Hall to get our cabin assignments. In the mean time, the counselors and CITs would lug the locker boxes out to the various cabins. And it went unbelievably smooth. Dave

On the donations site that FLL linked below, it has this information:
1. Retain the Bear as the primary passenger vessel. 2. Augment the Bear with two mid-sized passenger boats, one for each camp. 3. Purchase a primary logistics boat to haul trash and other heavy cargo. 4. Provide each camp with a small utility boat, with a capacity of 3-5 persons. 5. Complement current program boats with new purpose-designed boats for each camp to enhance water sports offerings. AND also, regarding the new boats, states: They are 32 feet long and built of welded aluminum Last edited by Bear Guy; 04-12-2024 at 12:30 PM. Reason: moro info |

Knowing what I know, without having seen it, I betcha this boat has a 140-hp, 4-cylinder Suzuki 4-stroke outboard purchased and installed from the Y-Landing Marina. Am I correct on this educated guess or what!
Could be that it has two 140-hp Suzuki's as opposed to just one? This motor is famous for long life, reliability, good gasoline use, and relatively light weight.

I hope somebody local will post a video of the Bear being launched. That's a big, wide boat for transport.
