Go to today's July 10, Laconia Daily Sun ..... top of front page .... BACTERIA BEACH ..... aka the beach at Weirs Beach .... seems like maybe no news is good news as far as testing the water for fecal bacteria in Laconia?
So, with no lifeguards and no state DES testing ..... what do you get ..... you get.... Bacteria Beach! Other similar names such as cancer creek, malaria mud puddle, and leprosy lake come to mind. Who remembers that old camp song from the 1960's ..... "leprosy, my god, I've got leprosy .... there goes my eyeball into your highball!"

How does a crowded swimming area contribute to the levels of human fecal bacteria?
Are the swimmers pooping in the water? Could there be an alternative explanation? When the beaches are very busy, I suspect that nearly all of the nearby cottages are also busy with their owners and guests visiting, spending the night and using their toilets. How good are the septic systems or sewer hook ups? Could the bacteria counts be elevated by leaking septic from cottages? How many cottages are on septic vs sewer? Is it possible to track the pollution back to its source, say, an individual cottage with a problem? Peeing while swimming is likely. Pooping while swimming? Unless it's a beach full of infants, I doubt it. |

If people want to submerge themselves at pea soup sand bars then go for it!
I prefer to swim in deeper water with very few people and boats around. We always try to find a quite cove to anchor and swim. |

So far through the years LSP has not been affected. I don't know how, I always swim at a beach away from that end anyway, but especially when Ellacoya closes.
Haven't heard anything from the park as of yet testing or anything. |
