I helped my friend put in his 60 foot aluminum dock lat Saturday. Now we did have on wetsuits, mine was a 3/2 mil. Once we got out into 4+ feet of water, I individually dropped a bolt, a flat washer, a lock washer, a bolt, and finally a wrench. Five times I had to dunk down and pick up the pesky, elusive dropped item. Invigorating.

May I suggest bringing a big magnet on a string next year?

Great idea on the magnet, unless the dock hardware is stainless steel. Magnets do not work on stainless.

After 40 years of putting in 5 sections in the cold water I now have a push button dock, so much better. I'll take my plunge Memorial Day.

Polar Bear challenges aside, the National Weather Service includes this in their Hazardous Weather Outlook:
"Warm temperatures combined with dangerously cold water will lead to a high paddlecraft risk over inland lakes and rivers." They also warn that frigid water can incapacitate a person in just a few minutes. For that reason, if you're out on the water, boating, kayaking or canoeing, they recommend a cold water suit, not just a life jacket. So, enjoy, but please be careful! |

Chief Thundercloud and I always celebrated our anniversary mid May at the lake so it was my opportunity to immerse in those wonderful healing waters.
How about take your breath away. Sprained ankles achieved miraculous cures on those occasions as well. I like June / July, August temps are too close to what the Cape has, and genuinely not refreshing on a wicked brutal day. I am ready...C'mon Dave unwrap "Dawn"! |

A few years ago, after sitting at my tiki bar a little too long, I went for a swim off my dock when the water temp was 43 degrees. After diving in, the cold water took my breath away. Luckily I wasn’t too far from my dock and I swam back to the dock ladder. As I climbed up the ladder and proceeded to walk down my dock, my muscles tightened up in my legs and I literally could barely walk. I looked directly at my wife and told her to never let me do that again! She looked back at me in amazement and muttered the word “idiot”...it was hard to argue that point with her....

....would, "...never let me do that again", mean sit at the tiki bar too long, or dive into 43 degree water...???

In my younger years, I would start waterskiing at this time... With out a wetsuit... I was tougher in those days.... now, I thank god I have sons... who help with the dock and other cold water activities such as getting the water line in place. For their sake, we have wet suits now......
