Hi there. First time posting (long time follower).
Went up to cottage for the first time this weekend and we were shocked to find our 40ft dock was stolen & boat lift was stripped. Called the police & they had 2 other reports of docks stolen. (We're located in Gilford near Ellacoya). Anyone else hear about this happening? |

Yup-pretty much our thoughts too when we saw it gone!
It was out of the water on our shore (it was an aluminum dock.) We had it taken out by professionals and they leave it on shore for the winter. |

We have a serious heroin epidemic here in the lakes region....
If your docks & boat lifts were made of aluminum its a safe bet they were stolen and sold for scrap $$$ by druggies... Woodsy

Druggie or not
Come on .... we're talking a 40 friggin foot dock !! Only way I can conceive of that "disappearing" is with a powerful quad or sled and dragged over the ice ! Even then, it would get mangled. What a shame and sad to say the world we live in now a days ![]() .

What AC said....
These folks are HIGHly motivated. Aluminum doesn't way that much and clean aluminum like that goes for a lot of $$$. Woodsy

Get used to theft in the area. This not a local problem with the heroin. It's an epidemic everywhere, especially in the NE where the huge increase of heroin use follows the huge rise in opiate pill abuse. Today's 'druggie' is not only found on 'skid row' in the big cities. They're your neighbors, co-workers, friends and family. It's EVERYWHERE. Be it in pill or powder form. Laconia would be the Lakes Region 'ground zero' for the heroin problem.

I guess that we have to make it harder for the thieves to steal the docking. Maybe use some really heavy duty chain to secure the sections to one another, and then chain to a tree or some other secure object.
If a thief wants something, they will find a way to get it. If they are stealing to turn it over to cash, they don't want to work hard for it. Also, prominently mark your aluminum docks with name and phone number by engraving in large letters and numbers, and in more than one place. At least if an honest metal salvage yard sees the name, it will ask for ID or make a call.

The Police need to take a major role here. EVERY scrap dealer within 100 miles needs to be informed of what is going on and warned not to accept this type of material. Then the Police need to visit EVERY scrap yard within 50 miles and inspect the premises for this aluminum stuff. Enforcement will get the message out and once they have no market, the thefts will diminish. If they find any scrap dealer with this stuff in their yard, they need to be brought to court as dealing in stolen property. And the newspapers need to get the word out as eel...see something, say something. We can bring better results if people are informed.

Clean aluminum will bring .60 cents a pound right now.

This might explain some of the docks that were listed on Craigs List this winter.
I'd suggest engraving some ID information on these docks. You may not want to put a phone number on it but make a SPAM email account if you don,t already have one and check it occasionally. Nothing you can do will be perfect. For instance, a sawz-all will cut a dock into digestible pieces. Make sure your insurance includes your seasonal items and hope for the best. Good luck! |

Probably the same link here:
http://www.laconiadailysun.com/index...oat-dock-theft Aluminum docks (and aluminum canoes) would be considered "clean". Attaching teak or mahogany strips to the dock's surface would make it less valuable for scrap. A custom paint job (e.g., red, white and blue) would discourage theft. At my former Florida home, the County once complained that "the homeless" would collect aluminum cans from the County-provided open residential recycling bins; today, the bins are wider, deeper, chest-high, and have a cover and wheels. Fortunately, the wheels have no recycling value. ![]() . |

Perhaps hobbits stole the docks, so it was supposed to say "shire"

more web cams will be set-up this season. We live here year round, and are the only ones who do in our area. I'm like a hawk. Anything amiss, I'm on it.

Over the years, our place was broken into a few times. One time, I discovered it by chance while passing through on a weekend of cross country skiing during college. The snow was deep, the road was blocked, so there was really nothing I could do but re-lock the door. Turns out, the thieves made off with what little of value remained in the house, including an old painting, a couple of rugs, and the television. After that year, I made a point of visiting it at least once each winter. We had a local friend check in on it regularly for years. They would've had a tough time making off with the wooden crib dock and boathouse, however! We used to keep my grandparents' car in the garage for the winter, and later one of my dad's boyhood friends kept his car in the garage when he spent winters in FLA. Never a problem there.
