So I have been driving down RT109 through Moultonborough, everyday for ten years now. I have three different model radar detectors. All of a sudden this week I have been getting hits, on two of them. The two newer Escort detectors. They are both getting hits on the long straight, heading North, just before you drive by the Suissevale entrances. So today I noticed there is now a black box hanging on one of the poles with a cable going to it. Looks like a game camera....sort of. Just wondering if anyone had heard of them using a speed camera. These radar hits had only just started over the holiday weekend. They are a weak strength signal but still detectable. Never had them in that location before as I have stated. Any way, if you travel through there I would slow down.....Ya never know if big brother is watching....

That got me curious, down here they warn you the camara is ahead. And yet they ( the company that owns the equipment) still makes millions off the morons that blow through them.... Seems in NH the speed camara trap is not permitted

I notice the cameras showing up at stop lights. But I have not heard of speed traps cameras.
Maybe some LEO on this website can clarify, but a few years ago a local municipality set up a camera on one of the trailers that record your speed. The local police started sending out citations to those who were recorded speeding. I can't recall the reason, but the citations were thrown out by the district court. I do know in Manchester and Nashua, the police been sending out citations for Stop signal/sign violations recorded on camera.

I'll try to narrow down where the hits start and end and maybe look at the box a little closer tonight....Might not be one at all. Just noticed the box this morning as I was headed to work. Might just be some kind of phone line box.
I had not looked up the laws, so thanks for that link. Interesting hearing about Nashua as I have a place there as well. |

Isn't it scary to think all the ways "BIG BROTHER" is isolating and following us these days.
Faces can be picked out almost two blocks away in this one picture!! This picture was taken with a 70,000 x 30,000 pixel camera (2100 Mega Pixels.) These cameras are not sold to the public and are being installed in strategic locations. The camera can identify a face among a multitude of people. Place your computer’s cursor in the mass of people and double-click a couple times (or 'finger-spread' on a device.) Scary sharp!! George Orwell must be smiling somewhere out there. http://www.gigapixel.com/mobile/?id=79995 |

These cameras are not seeing any sort of wide-spread deployment. Frame rates are too low, storage costs are too high. They make a nice demo though.

If it has a green light, it's a cable box. Rt 109 near Suisvalle seems like a strange place for a traffic camera.

Interesting image - it appears to have some post processing done though as some of the people appear to suddenly turn towards the camera as if it were a previous frame. |

Well I just drove by it on the way home. My detector goes off about 100 feet from the box. So I stopped and the detector was at full signal display sitting right next to it. So it is certainly the box. That box is temporary and new with padlocks on it. Maybe a traffic counter of some sort as I did not see a lens or eye on it anywhere. So here a couple pics of it. I am curious as to what it is though.

So are you saying it is really a speed trap? And will you get a ticket if you are going too fast, just like with the red light cameras? If so, all I can say is, God this is scary. As someone said, big brother is watching you!! When is all this going to stop????? Please tell me it isn't so.

Apparently, no camera. Just a new way to collect data. It holds the speed, direction and mostly counts cars. Better than a hose across the road.

So the next question I guess would be why in that location? That is a long straight with a passing zone in it. But no homes or businesses there.

LEO here. That's called a "Speed Spy". It is recording the speed of vehicles and will probably be removed within two weeks of its placement. It helps law enforcement establish a base line of what speeds vehicles are actually traveling at any given location so when complaints come in that all vehicles are speeding, they have the documentation to confirm or dispute the allegation. Over and out.

They had the same box near the PD, where it slows to 30, early this summer, then moved it to near the Center Harbor Diner, they were both in place for 3-4 weeks.
Can't imagine there won't be one on the neck, probably surveying for the highest revenue spot for a trap. I'm also getting a new hit between Buckeys and 109/old 109, telephone poles are obscured by trees, probably the same thing. |

That's too funny, I found him under the larger tree center left in the image, zoomed in of course. back to the camera.

Seems to me like this was most likely installed for a traffic study. I would speculate it is done in conjunction with a proposed development, and what impact that would have on current traffic conditions

Many cities and towns are conntracting with private companies to install red light cameras. The general agreement is for the community to invest nothing and the camera company will photograph violators and administer all aspects of the program and mail the city or town a monthly check.
I know that in some towns the ticket you get offers a discount, pay by mail with no points on your license program, or a higher fine amount and points if you choose to go to court and contest the ticket. It seems like it is all about revenue generation and has very little to do with public safety. |

In Florida they have the red light cameras and I heard that almost everyone who takes it to court wins. I don't remember all the details but the cities that installed them are losing money on them. THey are not working out as the cities hoped. I am sure you can google it if you want details. I should have said on stop lights. I never heard of them before this for speed.

The gray box you noted is what Time Warner uses in town for power supplies/battery backup.
That 25MPH sign looks likes its on States Landing? I don't see whats odd about advising motorists to slow down around this blind curve. the road is twisty at points and I observe speeding cars try to take up more than their lane. |

My understanding is that white speed limit signs are a limit and the yellow ones are advisory or warnings but not a limit. So it's not unusual at all to see lower speeds on curves.

This state has so much money apparently, that they either gave Wolfeboro money to put up a bunch of new signs. or they put them up themselves. Not sure who put them up. There has been quite a controversy because a lot of people don't like them, saying they are unnecessary. Some have been taken down.

speed traps generally have multiple cameras so that they can get multiple shots including from the rear as soon states only have one license plate and if so it is in the back. they usually will only send a ticket is they have a good clear facial picture. We have them in AZ and there is always a sign a few feet before saying photo enforcement zone. This certainly doesn't look like a speed trap a camera to me

Clearly it is NOT a robocop poised to send out tickets, and is just a high-tech version of the two-hoses-across-the-road traffic counters we've been seeing for years.
I wonder if the telco/powerco has given permission to use their poles? ![]() ![]() |

"Speed cameras on freeways across Arizona went dark just before midnight last night, ending the state's controversial experiment with photo enforcement.
The short-lived program expired after the state Department of Public Safety decided against renewing its contract with camera vendor Redflex Traffic Systems. Gov. Jan Brewer signaled in January that she planned to bring the cameras down. From the beginning, photo cameras had been heavily criticized as a government money-making scheme that did not enhance public safety. The program even incited vandalism of cameras and the fatal shooting of a Redflex technician last year." LINK Yes, we love, respect, and honor our men/women in blue. But when is enough enough? Just about all have license plate scanners. That data is kept forever. So the authorities know where you are and where you have been. And for those cheating on their spouses, make sure to cover your license plate at that motel where you have your "meetings" ! |
