Politics coming in
It sounds to me that there is more politics starting to come into the thread than concerns about the lake.

Well boys and girls if you haven't heard, Rick Santorum just bowed out. Romney is the defacto GOP nominee now. Wonder if he'll be visiting the lake this summer? He's welcome on my dock to watch the Independence Day Centre Harbor fireworks. Maybe that'll take some of the stress off the Wolfeboro residents, at least for the day.

First off, of course you're invited Steve! But, I was trying to take some of the stress off the southern residents of the lake by having him up north. If you corner him while he is here he might make an unexpected trip back to Wolfeboro and I would hate to see a barage of PT boats with bow guns blazin' to clear a path back home.

Presidential Aircraft
FYI!
Whatever aircraft carries President of United States, it is always known as Air Force One or Marine One. Laconia is far too short for the usual aircraft, as we see in media Pease would be the airport of choice. It was resurfaced just as elder Bush was becoming President. Pease has a military presence which none of us are aware the extent! And can be beefed up. |

The big 747 often used as Air Force One won't be able to land at Laconia, there are too many parachutes landing there.

Actually, for the elder Bush, while Pease was used for the 747, at least one other closer to Kennebunk small airport had an interesting "presence". I used to see them when I was flying a small airplane. I would suspect Laconia would have a "presence" also if Mitt gets elected.

This might be the perfect push the Noonans need to get approval for Skydive Laconia. Hey, Mitt waterskis so why not pull a parachute after jumping out of Airforce 1?

Mitt at the Lake...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/politi...DEW_story.html
This will be interesting. Even though I do not want him to be President, I do hope he enjoys his stay at the lake. Politics aside, he seems like a good family man.

You always hear on the news how stuffy he is. When he is in Wolfeboro, he is not stuffy at all. He acts just like the rest of us. He goes into the local hardware store, lumberyard, dive store. He goes to the dump since his "son's aren't always around to do it any more". He wears his old clothes just like the rest of us. No stuffy tie and suit around Wolfeboro. Most people that I know like him and Ann. They fit right in. Really. |

We went by his house by boat today and there were two MP boats out there. One was an old work type boat-big though and the other was a chaser boat. We also went to Robert's Cove to check out the loon baby but couldn't find it. The artificial nest is still there and I had said before it had a rope in place to hold it, but I think it must have an anchor. The rope must have been holding the nesting loon sign beside it. Has anyone seen any babies yet? Sorry, this is not a loon thread. Forget I asked.

I saw a motorcade blasting thru Alton on Saturday, state police cruiser, three suburbans and another St police cruiser. All had lights flashing and were traveling at a high rate of speed. Coming from W'boro. My first thought: Mitt sighting.

Is the Romny house done in California?
"Plans for the expansion, first reported by Politico and later obtained by The New York Times from a rival campaign, include a split-level, four-car garage with a “car lift,” an outdoor shower, and a 3,600-square-foot basement. A visit to the Romneys’ beachside property on Monday — one of three properties Mr. Romney and his wife, Ann, own — revealed a modest home for the wealthy enclave (at least from a street view) at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac. But an official city “Notice of Application” from April 2010 highlighted the changes to come: plans to “demolish the existing residence and construct a new, approximately 8,105-square-foot, single-family residence on a 0.41 acre site.” LINK Here is a nice picture of Romney's summer home in California. LINK Where do you think he will spend his summers? The 8,105 square foot new one with automobile elevator right on the ocean or the one in NH? |

No Coast Guard boats. But maybe CG people are manning MP boats? The big boat anchored said MP on the side. The chase boat was very close and maybe tied up to the big boat and was on the land side but it also didn't look like anything I have seen on the lake. It has two big outboards on the back. Someone said today they saw the boats being hauled in which makes sense.

I'll be taking a bi-plane ride over the lake on Thursday. Christmas gift from my daughter. I imagine there will restricted airspace over the compound. I have no problem with that.

Can you imagine being watched and photographed every moment you were out on your dock/beach or in town? No thanks! |

Lets face it he is one of us. Family man, (my grandfather had a photo op on every departure) long time resident (we have been on the lake 100 years this year) likes water sports (avid water skier) (how old is he?) obviously like the lake. (When you have the recourses to go any where in the world for vacation where do you go?) Hope he likes the Wolfeboro fire works this year.

Mrs. SteveA and her Mom did the Bi-Plane ride last summer. They loved it! They flew over towards Center Harbor.

Mitt at/on the lake
I was watching the news while getting ready for work this morning and low and behold a picture of the Romneys on a jetski and it appeared they were near the Mount dock in Wolfeboro. I could see the bridge going to the pack bay. Another shot was of a MP boat (the one that looks like a BIG INFLATABLE)

If you are talking about Romneys' place I don't think it is on the market.
The boat parked in back of the big MP boat look liked one of those inflatables. It was hard to see that one though. I could see the big two motors but not much else other than it did look red and it did look like an inflatable. Was the one you saw red? It was tiny compared to the big one in front of it. I am thinking that one might be a CG boat??? |

The boat in the above picture is a NH Marine Patrol boat. The attached is a picture of one of the two US Coast Gaurd boats they brought up last week.

Mitt hung in Maine. Between his hub-bub and the flagrant display of Marine Patrol and the S.S. I need some antacids. The parade was a real 'Mitt' Show this morning....

The parade was long (an hour and a half) but I was very disappointed in the floats. People used to decorate them and they looked so pretty. Now they just stick a sign on and that is it. I think they should at least put some streamers on or something. Libby Museum had some trees and animals and one other float had a tree but other than that, there weren't any decorations. Mitt was last before the fire trucks, but I think it might have been better to have him first and end the anticipation. But maybe they thought people would leave.

One reason not so obvious...
...I marched in a parade in Amhearst NH yesterday, and the politicians were last. Emergency vehicles were first...they do that every year, so they are not delayed any longer than is necessary...a good idea. First time I have seen the politicians last...great idea. For the rest of the marchers, it literally shortened the time of the parade as compared to last year by about a half hour. No one walking along the route in the front of the parade trying to shake every hand... on both sides of the street...creating an hour and a half of stop and go marching.

Seems that most if not all Coast Guard inflatables are red like the photo.
On a recent cruise, they DID have high power machinery mounted. All personnel aboard had very heavy duty life jacket gear, and helmets, as they moved around the ship as it exited the harbor. There may have been two. All part of U.S. Coast Guard presence on our coasts & harbors. So, instead of the armed Secret Service on foot, and w big black armored SUV, with presidential candidates, we will see armed Coast Guard boats on any body of water! EDIT: I am now visiting in Annapolis MD. People are on same "creek" as Coast Guard Station is located farther in. We see them go by, in & out all the time. Man here says same red hulled boats made by Zodiac are all over the country. Nothing new for them to be patrolling coast with ships constantly moving; here there are cargo ships constantly moving in/out of Baltimore, for example. So, to see them around presidential candidates will be nothing new. Same is true if we were to visit an airport where they fly in & out of, we will see additional aircraft on patrol. Even an added plane or two carries the secure automobile the President rides in, and secret service personnel with their vehicles. Nothing is left to chance. Therefore, THIS is what will happen and what happens NOW on the LAKE! Last edited by no-engine; 07-06-2012 at 10:19 AM. Reason: new info |

I think you will find that the Personal on the Coast Guard boats where not only from the Coast guard but also from the Secret Service.... Should Mitt win, I believe you will see Secret Service boats instead of the Coast Guard boats, just like they have in Kennebunk Port Maine, for the Bush family...
The Coast guard is not tasked with protecting the President, or Presidential candidate, The Secret Service is tasked solely with that responsibility.... and they bring there own equipment when practical... If Mitt loses they will not be responsible for his protection any more... Thus right now they are borrowing Coast Guard Equipment. The Secret Service Vessels in Kennebunk Port Maine, look just like the Coast Guard Boats pictured here. (not surprising at all)... And are heavily armed... There will also be increased Marine Patrol Presence when Mitt is around... As the Secret Service coordinate with the local law enforcement. I wouldn't be surprise to find out if Mitt Wins, the NH Marine Patrol, gets some Federal Grant Money.... Bottom Line, remember the Secret Service, is responsible for Presidential Candidates, and the President... Not the Coast Guard, not the Military, the Secret Service... So although the boats may have carried coast guard colors, they where maned with Secret Service agents.....

Nothing Happens Now
I took a bi-plane ride over the lake this afternoon and flew over the Romney compound. No machine guns being mounted or Blackhawk helicopters intercepting. It was a spectacular ride over the whole lake and I would recommend it for anyone. The pilot Phil, expertly piloted the 1935 Waco over Paugus Bay, Meredith, our summer home in Centre Harbor, then went over the Castle in the Clouds, and then back to the LRC for a perfect smooth landing.

They are in every coastal port; friends were on a cruise ship out of Baltimore and two of them escorted out the entire distance of Chesapeake Bay to open waters. Personnel wearing protective gear manned the bow & stern guns all the time. Serious! Protection of all Americans. They also are searching underwater. The boats are very "serious". I am sure will never be loaned, as the crew are highly trained. They likely take aboard NH Marine Patrol, for the local knowledge of the waters, or Secret Service for their duty of protection of presidential candidates. |

Ann Romney & Black's
Heard that Ann Romney was interviewed on The View last week. She talked about dealing with 18 grandkids at their Wolfeboro house by assigning chores such as table setting, clearing, etc. Each grandchild gets gold stars on a chart for weekly chores done. She then mentioned that at the end of the week the reward for the kids is a trip to Black's for a stuffed toy or some other goodie. Wonder how many viewers actually knew what Black's is? She just mentioned it in passing.

Also the Presidential detail of the SS is only a division of the SS and is for a set period of time and is mandatory. It is not a very fun time, long hours, tons of travel and lots of stress. Not a great stint of time for someone with a family. The lions share of Secret Service work is check fraud and other white collar crimes investigation. |

Marine 1 and Air Force 1, and other aircraft 1 are designated for ONLY THE specific aircraft that is carrying The President of the United States, never the candidates.

Interesting lake trivia.....
A good friend of mine from Wolfebore was the Ops officer of HMX-1 for quite a few years... had alot of GREAT stories! Somewhere I still have the Squadron coin he gave me.... You can also expect to be seeing these boats as well... they just got the contract for replacing the old Coast Guard RIBs.. check out the 28 Defiant! A certain principle of that company may or may not have been stopped on Lake Winni for a 150' violation! http://www.metalsharkboats.com/ Woodsy

The secret service doesn't have the specialties required to fly air force one, marine 1 etc. that is why these tasks are left to the marines and the airforce. However after reading many articles, and watching many programs, the SS is still task with overseeing all the work on these aircraft, and is responsible for the security of the aircraft as well....The airforce and marines, provide the pilots and the maintenance crews to the Secret Service. Bottom line, with the airforce and Marines take part of the security and transportation, while on those details the fall under the ultimate control of the Secret Service. Having talked with the Secret Service, about employment, believe me it isn't just the white collar crime, and the protection of the president that they are involved in. There job is quite diverse.

Well.....in about two to three days the Town of Wolfeboro will no longer be wondering if Romney will be the next president......nobody knows who will win......it will probably be very close....will Wolfeboro become summer home to the Whitehouse.....or will it stay unchanged?
Voting in Meredith usually takes just 5-minutes or less.......u-go-in.....u-vote...and.....u-leave......pretty simple.....if you want to be part of the process then u-need-to vote!

Let's hope we know in 2 or 3 days! Although it will be inconvenient, I think it will be very good for the town of Wolfeboro and the area.

Big time win for Romney across the country and we here in Wolfeboro are thrilled. Once in a life time for the economics of the town and area plus all that great comunication equipment the Secret Service will install. Better broad band for everyone.

Since he really is a nice guy as everyone who knows him will tell you, I think he will do as much as he possibly can to protect the town. We know we are dreaming if we think it won't change when he is here, but we will have to learn to live with it or stay out of town when he is here. I am with Acrossamerica, I will be thrilled if he wins.

Now me, I think he and the family will spend most of his free time IF elected out in California where he is spending big bucks to renovate his multi million dollar home out there. I do not think it would be any different then what Kennibunk was during the other elected officals summer resort was. Wolfeboro is a great town and the lake is just super to all of us and I'm dam sure we all can take him and the family with a big smile.

I would be very surprised if he isn't here in the summer. He loves it here and I don't think anything will keep him away. I think the only way he would miss Fourth of July here is if he physically wasn't able to get here. I bet he comes at least two or three times WHEN he is president.

or how about . . .
machine guns mounted on the Marine Patrol boats! "We don't give out no stinkin' speeding tickets!"
Or launching a submarine at the Wolfeboro town docks?!?!? Where will they keep the black helicopters? So many questions!

I'm Heading to the Romney Rally tonight at the Verizon in Manchester with a bunch of friends. I think it's awesome that he will be in Manchester the night before the election!!
He is an outstanding example of what a U.S. President should be. I pray that he wins.

What happens to the Lake...
There have been some subtle improvements made at the formerly-Wolfeboro Airpark, nothing which could support fixed-wing aircraft, but certainly could support a helicopter.

I am excited about seeing him tonight, hopeful and optimistic he will be elected President tomorrow, and if elected, I will be even more hopeful about the future for our United States, the future for my family, and especially for my 3 son's

Go Mitt!
I would HAPPILY give up my boating privileges for the next 4 years in order to see Mitt elected. If you-know-who gets re-elected, I won't be able to afford the boat (and probably a lot of other things) anyway.

Mitt's NH Hometown
Interesting stuff, folks.
I lived on Martha's Vineyard for about seven years, and during that time Clinton visited regularly. I can tell you that at that time (pre-911, remember), the "disturbance" to public places basically traveled in a large circle around the man (or Mrs. Clinton)...So if he was staying at his condo, you wouldn't know unless you went out that way. And when he came into town, the area immediately around him was upset but you could be a few streets over and never know. Still, I have to echo some of the comments from those experienced w/ the Bush compound in Maine. A lot depends on where the POTUS is, and whether it can be easily protected - or, "cut off", to put it another way. BTW, I thought some of you may be interested in the Oct. 30 post on this Lakes Region blog about Romney and his relationship w/ the Town of Wolfeboro... http://lakesregionofnewhampshire.blogspot.com/ |

As for where Mr. Romney will be watching the returns -- we are down here in Florida, and I did hear on one of the political shows over this past weekend that he will be at their home in Wolfeboro! The Romneys no longer own a home in Belmont. Does anyone know if there are extra news crews setting up in Wolfeboro? That would surely be an indication of where he will be.
