Someone mentioned to me this morning that they heard of a fatal collision yesterday near Governer's Island but I have not seen anything online or on the news. Does anyone have information regarding this?

I was passing thru the Govenor's Island bridge saturday night at approximately 10:15 and witnessed some of the commotion. At the Weirs end of the island there were approximately 5 MP boats and two family runabouts. I assumed a collision occured, given the amount of MP presence. I don't think there was a fatal, (I certainly hope not!) but judging by the percieved urgency of the situation, people on both civilian boats were talking alot and gesturing animatedly. Both boats looked ok, I did not see any EMS personell at the scene.

There was a low speed collision in the channel between Governors and the mainland. No injuries reported. There were several people on each boat, both from out of town.

Thanks for the info, I looked earlier in the day and it had not been posted to their site yet. A friend mentioned that they thought that they had heard of an accident with fatalities, I am glad they were wrong!

There was a better blurb in Mondays Union Leader on page A6 (Obits section). Unfortunately, they didn't post a link to it online yet. It basically stated that the accident was still under investigation, but it was a low speed collision, resulting in only minor damage to both boats. The accident involved 2 family runabout boats, a 23' Maxum carrying 4 adults and 5 children, operated by a 37 yr old Tewksbury MA man, and a 25' Searay carrying 4 adults, operated by a 51 yr old Tyngsboro MA man. They ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor. I am just glad there were no serious injuries. It looks like a simple case of operator inattention. I wonder if either operator has completed the safe boater certificate.
